Spacescape ID by DeepChrome Spacescape ID by DeepChrome
Yeah, the spacescape bug got to my IDs. So here's this one. :D A matching avatar is on its way

Greg Martin's starscape and planet-making tutorials helped me with this one. I came up with a modification of his methods for night-side lighting from other stars or nebulae so the nightside portions aren't this boring swatch of black. It just involves another few steps in the surface-making process. I basically tried it out as an experiment, and it turned out nice enough, so I'll probably keep using it.

All done in Photoshop 7.0 with Aiptek digital pen and tablet, which helped greatly with surface textures and the nebulae.

Beautiful colors. But... but... LENS FLARE?
Sorry to say that, but while the planet itself is looking really good, the Lens Flared stars around it somewhat ruin the piece for me.

Hmm.

Well it was either those or those normal fuzzy-brush gradient-effect stars which all LOOK the same. *sigh* I've used those before, and a certain odd thing happens after a while that just wrecks the effect with the standard fuzzy. It's like...not...quite right anymore.

Still working out the effects, anyways. *shrug*

Probably move past lens flares after a while.

I love it. It has very warm colors, with all the pink. And the nightside purpleness contributes to that too. It gives a very lifelike feeling to it.

However once I look longer at it (like, stare for a few minutes blank) there feels something... missing in it. Its as if the liveliness(sp?) of that beautifull planet is somewhat reduced by the space around it, wich is rather calm. Because you use these warm colors I think it might give them more power if you use them in the background as well, like brightening up the nebulae for example. Just a little bit however, because else you'd have to brighten the lightning on the planet too, wich might in turn upset the delicate balance again.
Its just that now it feels like it hovers somewhere in between of a usual dark and cold (but still pretty) spacescape, and the warmth of a 'space in autumn' if you know what I mean.
My two cents...

I still love it! Beautyfull.

That's an interesting take on the colors. Cool. I'll keep those in mind.

 Thanks for such an in-depth critique. They're so rare sometimes.

You'r welcome. Happy to hear you like it. I'm always a bit uneasy to tell what I really feel and think about someone's work, but I still think its a good thing to share such thoughts.
