Garth Nix's Sabriel by DeepChrome Garth Nix's Sabriel by DeepChrome
I'd just finished reading Sabriel, and am just about to start with Lirael. Out of boredom one night, I started prowling what DA had for Sabriel. I noticed some people lamented that there wasn't a lot of good fanart of her. There is some art of her as the Abhorsen, apparently everyone loves that surcoat, no matter how challenging it is to do keys.

(My version was to make a key-shaped custom brush and go to town. :p)

Anyways, here's my take, after an urge to draw my intepretation of the character, and the bells. (I'm still trying to work out how the heck those pouches work, but whatever...) I rather like Ranna, so that's the one she's holding. Whether or not that's even the right size for Ranna, I don't know. I was going for pouch the size of a pillbox, and the bell being around the same area in size.

What captivates me about that world is how powerfully sound is linked to magic - whistling a Mark, saying a Mark, sounding a bell, and so on. That's unusual, and I've got a fascination with sound and the way it affects us.

I've liked Sabriel because she's definitely a strong female character. A bit headstrong, definitely compassionate, and yet at times aloof and intelligent...all quite human, but still plenty heroic.

So there, you go. Some Sabriel fanart.

I'm not likely to make very much fanart of anything these days. There is on the Gunnerkrigg Court forums, a doodle involving a conversation between Reynardine and Mogget. But that's about it, and the chances of my doing more are pretty short.

Not to say I might not. At this point, my focus was on Sabriel, and interpreting her my way.

Sabriel is copyright Garth Nix and his publisher.

Around 5-6 hours (2-3 last night, and another 2-ish today) to do this. Done in Photoshop CS3 with a Wacom Intuos 6x8 tablet.

I would LOVE to see moggot and reynardine... I read the abhorson trilogy a long time ago, but just recently discovered gunnerkrigg court, and I like it very much. they do seem to have a similar tone don't they?

Heh. Mogget DEFINITELY reminded me of Reynardine. I dunno if anyone's asked Tom Siddell if the Old Kingdom books inspired him at all. :D

Mogget is such a sarcastic little shit - just like Reynardine.

It's been a while since I even posted this picture. Whether or not I do this, I don't know. But seeing as Mogget is a white cat, I might just try pulling it off. Thanks!
