Eve of Assimilation by DeepChrome Eve of Assimilation by DeepChrome
The traditional Borg greeting you're liable to get if you stumble upon this scene: "Prepare to be assimilated. Your biological and technological distinctiveness shall be added to our own. Resistance is futile."

This is based off a scene from before the beginning of the Star Trek two-part episode "Best of Both Worlds" which is considered by many Trek and sci-fi fans to be probably one of the finest Star Trek episodes, ever. The Borg were at the absolute pinnacle of their game in this two-parter, putting humanity, Earth, and our way of life at risk of total annihilation (or, worse, absorption into the Borg's uncaring, unfeeling quest for perfection). I was inspired after Terragen spat out a ruddy colored scene, and was later reminded that Jouret 4, the planet the Enterprise visits to find a colonial city completely GONE, replaced by a hollowed out crater, could be easily duplicated.

Plus, I'd always thought it'd be cool to show the Cube actually digging up a city off the planet's ground. Most fanart of the Borg has cubes floating in space or the like. I wanted to try something....different. :D This is the result.

Terragen for the scenery (sky and landscape both)....the rest is done in Adobe Photoshop 7.0 with Aiptek digital pen and tablet. :O_o:

This one I got together in about....4 hours maybe, between puttering in Terragen getting the terrain right, and then painting all this stuff in Photoshop. :dead: The worst part of it probably had to be, once again, detailing the Cubeship. :faint:

The last time I did such an extensive Terragen/Photoshop hybrid like this was that pic of Jark's homeworld, complete with probe-shaped towers. I'd like to think I did a better job of combining the elements this time around, but that could just be me. :aww: I'd appreciate any comments, criticisms, or thoughts. I gave the TG render a quick eyeballing to make sure things weren't too pixilated...and when zooming in to do the smoke effects, I don't think I saw anything glaringly WRONG with this render. I hope.

Oh yeah, Star Trek and the Borg are copyright Paramount Studios. :D I just wanted to pay homage to both in this picture.

I'm definately a fan of this one. And I have to agree, "The Best of Both Worlds" was one of the top TNG episodes.

Thanks. The terrain I did in a rendering software--I don't think I could've done it without that program's help. :D I did the Cube, the Beam, and parts of that rock.

I had a load of fun doing it, so I'm glad people are having fun with it.

"All Good Things..." would kick BOBW's ass, and THEN some

"All Good Things" is not the topic of this piece, and therefore is irrelevant.

Resistance is futile. :altermind:

It was, but it doesn't match up to BOBW in certain areas. :aww:

Now, I have a question for you.

Where exactly did you find the reason to say your favorite was better than BOBW when "All Good Things" wasn't even mentioned in the topic line? :aww: Because this sounds mightily like trying to start an argument to me.

i have to say though, BBOW was a pretty good borg ep, since after that VGR came along and totally wussed them out

in BBOW a single cube destroyed fleets of fed ship, in VGR a single ship destroyed the whole freaking collective!!!

Hmm, what would be a better Borg episode than BOBW if Voyager wussed out the Borg? What are you left with? I, Borg is a more intimate episode. Descent could've been skipped. Scorpion I and II in Voyager was the best Voy ever did with the Collective.

After that it goes downhill.

So I fail to see why your reasoning doesn't fit up with how the writers handled the Borg in BOBW.

I agree that All Good Things is good, I'm not knocking it. It's simply not my favorite.

You just contradicted yourself. And you've just managed to disagree with yourself. :aww:

I suggest you quit while you're ahead, because I don't like to deal with people who contradict themselves that obviously.

Awesome! I love the look of the holding beam. And the idea of the Borg assimilating a land mass rather then a ship is quite creative. Phobic would be pissing herself by now.:D

You know what that land mass reminds me of now? The Knox. Remember the SG-1 episode that we saw the Knox had a large city, on an island floating in the air?

Uncanny resemblance.=p

 Tech like that probably would've gotten the Seal of Assimilation from the Borg if they knew about it. Though the Nox would likely be too smart to be easily caught by the likes of them. :O_o:

Quite true! Might make an interesting crossover. Or maybe a future dev. A bunch of Nox cloaked and giggling, while a few Borg drones are looking about confused and having the expression, "wtf?".

Wow, amazing. The combination of Terragen and PS is great, as is the overall effect of the image. Everything sort of adds up to that impending doom effect. I also think it's cool how you put the cube right in front of the sun, adds to the effect as well. It really shows that you spent so much time on the details on the cube. That whole tearing a city out of the ground concept is really cool too, I guess they're the Borg, they can do that kind of stuff. Anyway, great piece!

Thanks for taking the time to say such an insightful comment. And yeah, the Cube was the most time-consuming element. That and getting the terrain together with the Cube being in the sky in my mind as I rendered it.

The Borg not only can gobble up entire cities out of the ground, but they did--there was mention in some other Next Generation episode that somebody had been running along the Federation-Romulan border, yanking entire colonies out of the ground. Nobody outright mentions it in an episode, but I read an interview of one Trek writer who confirmed that it was indeed the Borg. ;))
