In the early 21st century, the world ended.
It was rather unexpected, and just about ruined everyone's day. We'd all been enjoying a good Golden Age, what with all the meta-humans that had been showing up for the last fifty years or so. I mean, suddenly there were superheroes everywhere. Aside from the super villains that followed as a matter of course, how is that not awesome? Lots of cool new research could be done thanks to all the meta-humans, so everyone was getting neat new tech toys. Some of them even helped settle that whole 'global warming & climate change' panic. Lots of the meta-humans were getting sponsored by governments and corporations, so a lot of global conflict was dropping off. The economy was even picking up, though I've yet to puzzle out exactly why.
Then the world ended. Most anything more technologically advanced than a steam engine basically disintegrated. A lot of cities more or less exploded. No one ever really knew what exactly caused it. Most records agree that, whatever it was, it started in the Crystal Forest that used to be called New York. Some religious nuts that popped up fairly recently go looking for Old York sometimes. They think finding it will reveal answers of some sort. I haven't the heart to tell them they're looking on the wrong continent.
Time passed. Most people got on with life as best they could. Many resorted to simple survival. Some tried, mostly in vain, to rebuild a world that was suddenly gone. Some carved out their own little kingdoms in the world they suddenly had. Others looked farther afield, and lay the foundations for the empires that their descendents have built hundreds of years later. And before an alarmingly short amount of time had passed, most people had forgotten what exactly the world had lost.
A lot of people took on the belief that magic destroyed the world. Most of the towns built on the ruins of the old world cities continue to have a notable lack of strong magic. Maybe they drive away the ambient magic naturally in their desperate scrambles to rebuild civilization. Their inhabitants often seem to pick up on the belief that if they get rid of magic somehow, the world they lost will come back to them. So they hunt down those who use magic, they destroy the unnatural wherever they can, and they stay away from anything they can't destroy.
It's been almost two thousand years, and as far as I know, magic is here for good. I've never liked senseless zealotry, and it seems to me that their hysterical fear and anger against what they can't understand is only taking them farther from the golden age they wish to reclaim.
But hey, what would I know? I'm only immortal.
