The EMD GP15-1 by DDL-Photography The EMD GP15-1 by DDL-Photography

St. Paul, MN

Bathed in the late autumn afternoon sun, a Union Pacific GP15-1 sits in UP's Belt Yard waiting for it's next switching assignment.

The GP15 program was started to entice railroads to turn in their old worn out GP7's, GP9's and GP18's to have rebuilt into more modern 4 axle locomotives.

The GP15 is also the only four axle locomotive to share the same radiator design along with the SD45T-2 and the SD40T-2. The concept came from a request to EMD by Southern Pacific who was having trouble with their locomotives overheating in long tunnels since the cooling fans were on top of the locomotive which drew in air from above and was all ready heated up by the engine exhaust causing the overheating troubles. EMD came up the the "Tunnel Motor" design to instead have the cooling fans mounted under the radiator cores and draw in cooler air from the bottom of the tunnels thus the large intake screen towards the bottom of the radiator section near the walkway. Due to the shared design, the GP15's have been nicknamed "Baby Tunnel Motors".

This locomotive started out life with Missouri Pacific and has the following history:

Ex-Union Pacific 1639
Ex-Missouri Pacific 1639

Built by EMD in September 1979

This locomotive and the other locomotives in this lash up can be seen in full HD on my YouTube Channel here [link]
