Back to Passenger Service by DDL-Photography Back to Passenger Service by DDL-Photography
Built for Great Northern as number 325 in May of 1966, she was one of only six SDP40's built for the U.S. market. Basically an SD40 that had a steam generator mounted on the rear hood thus adding the "P" for passenger service in SDP40. She then began her short career hauling passenger trains for GN

After the merger that created the Burlington Northern and with the formation of Amtrak she became BN 9855 and was put into regular freight service. Later in life she became BN 6399 and kept this number until the BNSF merger.. She was the only SDP40 that was painted in the White Face paint scheme when BN started painting locomotives in that new scheme.

After being retired, she was donated to the Minnesota Transportation Museum in St. Paul, MN. She is now back to doing what she was built for, pulling passengers trains, but now for the Osceola & St. Croix Valley Railway out of Osceola, WI.

Recently she has since had her nose light removed, covered and renumbered back to her original number 325. Plans have been made to repaint her back into the Great Northern "Big Sky Blue" paint scheme in the future.

Personally, I prefer the White-Face...But GN colors will also be pretty neat!

Yeah, the white face was neat at first because it was new, but I'll take the old scheme with the stripes on the nose. She'll look good back in her GN paint and markings, but personally I was hoping for the old green and orange scheme.
