A couple of things: GIMP lags on me now which makes it a pain on me and my laptop to record process videos.  And since tumblr has a following size that's a third of my dA, a lot of people may be missing my WIP shots.  So I hope it won't bother anyone that I make and update journals that show my process.  I hope you'll find them interesting and inspiring.  And also, I hope people will stop asking me what program I work in lol on top of the fact that it's listed in my interests under Tools of the Trade, I've also had a FAQ made so please check those before asking questions.  Further info about my process will be located under each WIP shot!

☺☻

:new:Concept: The PPG have come just in time, each arriving from their separate corner of life, to save the city of Townsville.

►Brush used for sketching: Pencil sketch (16x16) scaled at .40, brush dynamics: Pressure - Opacity and Size.
►Reference used: Blossom by Artgerm
:new:Each girl's design include a nod to a major villain.  Fuzzy Lumpkins for Bubbles, Mojo Jojo for Buttercup and HIM for Blossom

:new:Sketch, shade, and flats layers merged painted over to bring up the quality of the picture.  Brushes used are all the standard Circle sizes
:new:Nod's to my favorite and most memorable PPG song: "L O V E" tattooed on Buttercup's fingers (because her fist makes Mojo's world go 'round); Dandelion's on Bubble's Fuzzy Lumpkin colored book bag (probably full of things to make people feel better when they try to hurt her with the things that they do); Blossom's shirt will include a company logo of a heart with "Puppy Dogs & Kitty Cats" (maybe she works at a cute pet shop? but had to ask her boss to be excused before joining her sisters to kick HIM's butt)

Feel free to leave thoughts and questions! (I may not be able to address them but I will have read them)

All I can say is that you're really talented and I hope you make it really far and excel to whatever career you want.

Just yesterday I tried working on GIMP for like the 50th time and I couldn't do it without wanting to throw my computer out the window. However, I won't give up, you're pretty inspiring, dude. I guess this helps out a little on what I can try to do. So I'll give it a shot.

At first when I saw the word PPG I thought you were doing a copy of Artgerm's girls, but then I saw your version, and I was mindblown. It's amazing!

I would have thought you used pen tool for your line art because it looks so clean, but im impressed to see that you just used brush. Im curious though, you say you leave brush dynamics on however the main lines look pretty consistent. Do you turn off pressure for some of the line or just apply alot of pressure manually to keep the line hard?

I'm surprised you get asked that so much since the way I actually found your page was by asking in the art forum here on deviantart if anyone knew of any professional-level artists who primarily used GIMP.  You're a testament to being able to do work that's just as awesome without breaking the bank or pirating Photoshop. If I were the webmaster for gimp.org I'd want your stuff showcased wherever possible on that website. :P

I'd like to see you try FireAlpaca at some point. I recently started using it and it's quite fun for painting.

Do you draw the backgrounds yourself too?

How do you get the tool boxes to stop floating or did this version come with that.
Missvirginia's avatar
Dock them, just drag it over to the tool box until a little highlight appears and they should drop in place. Alternatively you can just click the little to right on the tool box and click "Add Tab" and pick the dialog you want to dock together with the others. He's using version 2.6 btw.

Can you do that ps cs2? (it has the stupid floating toolboxes)
Missvirginia's avatar
Well, I've never used CS2 (Just CS4 and 6), but it's a fairly basic feature, so I imagine it would work the same way or similarly for all of them. Drag the dialog box over until you see the line appear and it should dock. There may be a little "add to dock" option as well hidden in a little arrow somewhere, I know PS hides a lot of its options like that.

Yeah i'm been trying that all day lol. Maybe I'll try krita or something.

Odd, sorry I couldn't be of more help. ^^; I hear Krita is good, one of these days I'll give it a try.

So they're teenagers now and they grew hands through puberty? cool.. You should try this program called Krita, if gimp is acting up.

love it - do you use the buttons on your bamboo, keyboard shortcuts or the buttons on the right panel?
secondly, what version of GIMP are you running and what are your system specs?
just curious ^^
