Seriously I do not understand why people think Vegeta deserves to get some kind of "payback" on Freeza. I don't care if Vegeta has become somewhat of a good guy now, that does not change his past and who he was. He was a cold bastard even by saiyan standards. Vegeta back then was just as evil as Freeza was. There is no limit Freeza would not cross that Vegeta wouldn't either. Both would kill their own men to achieve their goals, both are power hungry, and both would do anything to be the strongest in the universe.

What does that have to do with Vegeta being good now? Why should Vegeta not get some sort of "revenge" for his poor treatment at the hands of Freeza now that he's become good? That's because Vegeta was an asshole in the past. The past was literally one evil asshole making another evil assholes life miserable. If Freeza weren't around, do you think Vegeta would have done any good? No. No he would not. He would still be a conqueror and he still would pretty much do what Freeza did, except with him on top as the leader. Vegeta deserved everything he got when he was younger as he was a cold saiyan. Do not for some reason confuse that dumbass dub line of Vegeta saying "He made me do it/what I am" as that's a load of horse shit. Vegeta did several awful things of his own accord and took pleasure in it.

Why would Vegeta deserve to get his revenge if all Freeza did was contain another asshole who was just as evil as him. What kind of story would it be if Vegeta was like "Yeah take that Freeza, that's what you get for stopping me from being the top genocidal maniac!" Oh wow, he really deserves revenge for that. Curse that Freeza for stopping Vegeta from being the top genocidal maniac. Vegeta should totally pay Freeza back for not letting him call the shots on destroying and selling worlds. Seriously fuck this stupid idea. If Freeza was actually the cause of Vegeta becoming who he was as an evil monster, then perhaps this would make sense. Except Freeza did not make Vegeta evil, Vegeta was already evil and delightfully enjoyed killing innocent people. So really whether Freeza was around or not, Vegeta would always be an asshole. Does Vegeta truly deserve revenge for a past where he was just as evil as Freeza? No. I would actually give points to DBM for once with that interaction Vegeta had with his alternate universe self who became King Vegeta. That sums up that if anything the whole experience turned Vegeta into a good guy over time. Without Freeza Vegeta wouldn't have become good eventually.

I too am tired of Goku being the main spotlight who gets to do everything. I don't mind Vegeta becoming a god or being equal to Goku possibly once again. However I think he just doesn't deserve shit. At most I can see Goku or Goku and Vegeta winning by working together, but then Vegeta doesn't kill Freeza since without Freeza, he'd have always been an evil bastard. It was the drive to beat Freeza that had him sought out the Dragon Balls to become immortal, and it was that drive that had Goku and Vegeta meet and soon become friends after all the arcs concluded. Vegeta was forced to team up with the earthlings so much he became accustomed to them, without Freeza he'd have nothing to fight or join against, so he'd always remain evil. Vegeta can play a prominent role, but to give him top billing over Goku just cause of his past (which he deserved to be miserable) is just silly.

Is this the Sonic 06 of Dragon Ball?

Now I don't even think Toriyama himself knows what he's doing. Someone get him a editor like he had in the past and stat. I'll leave these rants here that sum it up. What is wrong with the Saiyans being heartless bastards? What was wrong with Goku being sent to conqueror instead of just be safe on earth? What was wrong with the psychic powers that cursed Bardock to see the demise of him and his race that he could not prevent. Why is Goku's parents becoming such good people? Sure Bardock was out killing another race, but Gine herself is overly soft...like Goku...Why? I liked it better when Goku would have grown up to be a rotten bastard had he not bumped his head. This impact is worse than Episode of Bardock...at least that was a dumb side special, this affects everything we knew about Dragon Balls past.

PENGUINTRUTH

"I definitely preferred to think of Bardock as he's portrayed in the TV Special, not really giving a single f*** about Kakkarot, who was a weakling. I would assume that Goku's mother was just some broodmare the Saiyans used to breed.

I don't want Goku's separation from his parents to be poignant. The whole point of Goku is that he's different from everyone else. I know that, narratively, making the Saiyans a more complex bunch makes for better universe building, but they're not intended to be complex.

This is why delving into the pasts of the characters is a bad idea. Revealing too much removes a lot of the mystique and wonder of the DB universe.

Next we'll learn that Freeza was a really great guy until his puppy, Snowcone, was hit by a space bus driven by Recoome. After getting beaten badly by Freeza in retaliation, Recoome became mentally handicap, and Freeza was then evil.

Oooh, how about this? Pilaf was once the prince of a monster kingdom that was destroyed in the aftermath of Piccolo Daimao's original reign of terror. You see, monsters were discriminated against and the world military was first formed to wipe out several monster kingdoms for fear that they might produce another Piccolo Daimao, not knowing where he really came from. Pilaf was the only survivor, claiming to be the Emperor, but with no kingdom to command, and thus his obsession with conquering the world.

What about this? The dinosaurs we see wandering around in DB Earth are the result of experiments Dr. Brief conducted ages ago involving a prototype time machine, and the disaster that resulted had him shelf the plans. Bulma, however, in the alternate future, came upon them in Capsule Corp basement and constructed a better version of it, sending Trunks back in time in it.

Do those all sound hackneyed and trite origin stories composed simply to make minor characters more interesting when they were never intended to be? There's a reason for that. BECAUSE THEY ARE. Just like DB Minus."

AJAYLIKESGAMING

"Jeez, just wrapped up Dragon Ball Minus. That was...abysmal

It just felt like a lazily written advertisement for Jaco, Battle of Gods and maybe even Episode of Bardock.

I totally get that's it's just a short extra chapter but when you're messing with something as historical as Dragon Ball, I feel like you should at least make an effort to develop your new characters and take the time to write dialogue that actually sounds like it belongs in the franchise and not some pre-school fan fiction. Perhaps that's a translation issue but even in terms of structure and basic logic, it was heavily flawed.

I don't even know what to say, that was just awful. I didn't enjoy Jaco that much but christ, it was a heck of a lot better than that garbage.

If it weren't for Toriyama's contributions to Battle of Gods, I would feel totally comfortable saying that he doesn't know what he's doing anymore."

GAFFER TAPE

"I feel like I'm really behind on the bandwagon here, but I just read DB- for the first time. And color me disgusted.

You know what? I don't care. I *really* don't care that it contradicts the TV special. I never cared. In fact, I expected it, especially after that shot of toddler Goku in Jaco appeared. I was almost looking forward to it. I never assumed that just because Toriyama put Bardock in a couple of panels in the manga that that undeniably meant the entirety of the special was canon to the manga continuity. So Toriyama wanted to do his own take? I admit I was hesitant about the idea of adding Goku's mother in, and I think I was pretty vocal about that when it was first announced, but I was trying to reserve judgment until I actually saw where it was going.

But when I get right down to it, ignoring the TV special entirely, I find that this is just a *terrible* story. There is just no way something this short can get across the ideas and feelings it hints at, so the whole thing just careens along at a breakneck pace that's almost nothing but clunky exposition and unexplained motives and characterizations. I was worried that Gine was going to be some perfect, wonderful fanfic-esque character, but, honestly, if I hadn't already read the Toriyama interview about her, I'd barely have any idea who she was. Hell, I still barely know who she was. I barely know who Bardock is!

Maybe it's just my prior knowledge of the series, but I can't exactly commend Bardock for "solving the big mystery." I mean, really? Freeza has been asking around about the Super Saiyan, the legendary warrior said to be stronger than all else (even Freeza), and he suddenly and unexpectedly calls all the Saiyans back to the same location? Um... trap, much? But, again, it's dealt with so quickly and vaguely that I'm not sure if all the other Saiyans look like complete idiots for not putting two and two together, or that Bardock looks like a paranoid conspiracy theorist for being so sure about it with so little information.

Then there's the fact that this origin story is just such a copy of Superman. I mean, the parallels have always been tossed around. But this...? I half expected Bardock to put his hand on the space pod and say, "They can be a great people, Kal-El-Karrot. They wish to be. They only lack the light to show them the way." So completely gone is the idea that Goku was sent to earth to destroy it by his barbaric race but through a twist of fortune ended up becoming good. Instead, he was sent there by his loving parents to keep him safe.

It's exactly what I feared. It makes Goku too "special." Or, specifically, it makes his origin too special. His parents were aberrations who loved each other and showed affection to their children. They're the only ones who figured out what Freeza was up to and took the steps that ultimately led to Freeza's defeat. It's just too pat. I hate to make the comparison, especially in light of everyone balking that it "retcons" the TV special (which it doesn't... the TV special would have had to have been explicitly in the manga's continuity to begin with in order to be retconned), but the TV special walked that tightrope perfectly. It gave Bardock just enough pathos and uniqueness that you could sympathize with him as the protagonist, but it didn't make him out to be anything more than just an evil thug. It played with the idea of him trying to do something to make a difference to his fate and his son's fate, but he ultimately failed, which makes Freeza's memories of him tragically humorous: he was just that guy who got in the way at the last second, and nothing special about him was even remembered or known.

Ultimately, it's fan-service, plain and simple. There's no story here. It's just a bunch of, "Ooh, look, it's Goku's parents." "Ooh, look, it's Vegeta and Raditz as kids." "Ooh, look at all the shiny new backstory." What a waste. I'd rather it not have been written, which is a shame because what I've read of Jaco I've enjoyed immensely. But between this and the abysmal Episode of Bardock, I'd say it's clear they need to put this character on a shelf and never, ever use him again."

I can not get enough of Kuu-Zen-Zetsu-Go. This whole thing may be my favourite intro and theme. The ending theme is nice too, though the outro isn't that great.

Let's hope the english side doesn't get something like the below one somehow :bleh:...Man is that corney ass all hell.
