To get the NEW Generator click DOWNLOAD. Note that this will only run in Excel!

IMPORTANT!!!! Before opening the file, change the file extension from ".doc" to ".xls" so it will open in Excel!

The new and improved Random Character Generator is here! Version 1 ([link]) contained just shy of 36,500 possible characters... Version 2 contains more than 344,000!

Let me know how this works out for you. I'm interested to see your characters!

***********************************************
This version should run in Excel after the file extension name change. If not please follow these instructions:

First make sure that the "Analysis ToolPak" Add-In is turned on (Go to TOOLS on the top menu bar, in the TOOLS menu go to the "Add-Ins..." option and make sure that the "Analysis ToolPak" [top entry] is turned on). In theory this should be the only thing that is required. However, if you see "#NAME?" errors in the entries simply select (double click) the cell with the error to see the formula I used, select the end of the formula (don't change anything) and press enter. Do this for all cells with errors!

I'm guessing the generator doesn't work so well on tablet?

Are there any copyright restrictions on characters created by this?

I don't think that there are... whenever I use it to create an actual character I have renamed the character to make them "mine" (the names are usually pretty generic otherwise, they are more of a descriptive starting point).  I use the generator to help get out of a creative rut or as an exercise to think outside the box.

Nicely done.

You know, I've been working on a random character generator of my own- though it's designed to generate far more of a character than just their names. It never occurred to me to use excel to punch the algorithms before. Mind you, I don't have much of a head for numbers, so I hope you it's okay if I borrow some of the formulas you used in your thing.

It's fine I just used generic formulae to draw from databases... I am intrigued by a more indepth generator

Yea, this doesn't work for me. The computer won't allow me to change to extension from .doc to .xls. XP
