After a long break from submitting artwork here on DA, I have returned to post another dragon piece.

What can I say about this one? A lot, actually. It took me quite a long time to complete, and there are still things that I would love to go back and retouch at some point, but I need a break from it for a while.

There is a lot of emotion behind this one. It’s a beloved character of my own creation, one that I have been writing about and RPing as for years. She plays a key part in my own storylines, and has gained recognition in the RPG community I am heavily involved in. This dragoness will remain nameless here, however, because the name that would apply to her in this image is one I do not yet know. ((She has many, many names)) The real reason she is so significant to me, however, is that she is the mother of one of my main characters, Dazvinik.

I dedicate this piece to my own mom. She has been my best friend for as long as I can ever remember, and she has shown endless amounts of support to me and my passions. She has listened to hours upon hours of my ranting about plots going on in my RPGs, and she has helped me work through my story ideas. Other than me, she is the person who has the closest bond to any and all of my characters. She has taken the time to listen, to understand, and to know both them and myself. I cannot truly express my gratitude for that.

Ironically, she was there to help critique this piece as I was working on it, but I did not tell her until today, the day I finished it, that it is for her. *is sneaky that way* So here’s my small way of saying thank you, for all the time that she has spent with me, the infinite support given to my art, writing, and beyond, and most of all, for allowing me to be who I am without attempting to force any molds or constraints upon me.

Artistically speaking, this piece was a sort of breakthrough for me. It was one of those images that was incredibly fun to do at times, and downright hellish other times. There were times when I wanted to rush things, push aside little mistakes, or neglect to sharpen things up the way I really wanted to. However, I forced myself not to do so. I really took my time and tried to get everything ‘right’. Still, there are a few things I feel I neglected a bit… But overall I am pleased. I am glad I spent every second I did on it, though. I think it was all worth it in the end.

Time spent: 70+ hours
Program Used: Photoshop CS 2
Tools: Wacom Intuos tablet

Oh, wow! Thanks to the admins for getting this approved for print so quickly! :aww:

Ok, as promised, here are the close-ups and the original sketch of this image:

This is a rather lovely piece. The only thing that throws me off is the anatomy of the hindquarters and the length of the body being too short (In my opinion). Other than that you did a wonderful job on this :D

Thank you!

That might be the foreshortening coming into play, as her body is twisted to have a more head-on view. My dragons have rather compact torsos to begin with, as their physiques are loosely based on the anatomy of Dromaeosauridae family dinosaurs, so it's easy to make them look a little squashed. :XD: I'm not pleased with certain aspects of her hindquarters as well, mainly the flatness I see in the rendering. Her shoulder still bothers me the most, though. Fortunately my knowledge of anatomy has improved greatly since the production of this piece, so hopefully my new dragons will be a bit more realistic. :D

You're welcome, and I did note you drew this about two years ago, so no doubt you've improved :3

 The really cool thing I have learned about studying art is that everything hinges together so deeply. I took two courses on human anatomy/figure drawing this past semester, and interestingly enough, learning about the human form has given me deeper insight on my draconic forms. It's really fun stuff!

It's very true, as I've learned the same thing taking my own figure drawing classes out at college :D

I will definitely do so! This dragoness is a 'key player' in my own works, so she is going to appear in many other pieces... Though her appearance may not always be the same. ;)

Heehee thanks. Scary isn’t a bad thing in my opinion, unless you meant it as 'bad' instead of 'eerie'. :XD: I was attempting to give the piece a balance... Serene yet ominous, peaceful yet fierce.

That's a pretty nice space pic your brother has... Personally I avoid the use of any 3d softwares, but that's only because I haven't taken the time to sit down and actually use one properly. I've noticed that just dabbling in softwares like that tends to just produce mediocre pieces, so for now I shall focus strictly on painting. 3D is in my foreseeable future though, I hope.

I'm looking forward to making some more eerie skyscapes in the near future. A particular scene from the movie 'The Time Machine' has inspired me to paint images of moons that are broken apart. I'm thinking of doing a painting of a hellish realm that exists within my own mind... I think I will try to incorporate something of that nature into the scene. :w00t:
