Dawn Vermillion is an environmental artist, living in the mountains of Colorado. Her subjects are usually drawn from nature and have a cause that is dear to her, embedded in their backstory. Environmental conservation, humanitarian issues, and animal issues are at the core of her work. However emotion, the abstract or whimsy does have its place and finds a way in occasionally.

Dawn was raised on the eastern seaboard, near the Chesapeake Bay. She has an inherent love for nature, animals, art, science and travel that became the foundation of her life. Throughout childhood, she traveled all over the world, getting to experience many cultures and landscapes.

Dawn always had a natural art ability and would draw and sculpt things in her environment and imagination. She attended what is now, The College of Southern Maryland, where she excelled at color theory, illustration and sculpture. The urge to travel got the best of her and she left the east coast to explore the United States.

Dawn lived in her 1976 VW van and traveled the country as an artist, going to music festivals and experiencing anything life brought her way. On her travels, she lived in Wisconsin for almost a year working as a mural artist. Mural art expanded her art ability, learning to work with large scale and the outdoor setting. Having to be on scaffolding stories off the ground also brought the necessity to conquer her fear of heights.

Colorado became a favorite spot for Dawn, returning to it again and again as she crisscrossed the country. In the late nineties, pregnant with her only child, she settled down in Colorado. The years of near constant travel and living in a van came to a close.

Dawn trained and became a registered midwife in the state of Colorado. Art was not far from her and she used it to help her clients express their hopes and fears about their experiences giving birth and becoming parents. “Birth Art” was a favorite practice, among the parents in the childbirth classes she taught.

Dawn left midwifery to pursue more formal art training at the Academy of Art University, majoring in illustration, while she worked as a freelance artist. She currently resides in the Colorado Rocky Mountains with her husband and son. She continues to explore art. She never lost her love for travel and escapes as often as she can. Science still plays a role in her life as well; she is working to finish her bachelor’s degree in environmental science with a concentration in sustainability.

With her art, Dawn supports environmental conservation, humanitarian and animal causes and brings awareness to their needs. 10% of the profit from her art will be given to environmental conservation, humanitarian, and animal organizations. The piece’s description indicates the cause it supports.

Things Dawn likes doing other than art are: spending time with family, dancing, concerts, mountain biking, hiking, kayaking, camping, drumming with a djembe, astrophotography, making jewelry, permaculture gardening, and cooking with whole foods.
