You have a very strange taste, Sir.
I, for one, wouldn't want to read a comic about a decayed corpse and a walking shark... But I hope you find your auditory, however weird!! :)

so, skull is based on you, who's the shark? by the way nice video, if you want advice, dont use SEGA letters for your name, if you want they support or make a video game, do it with your talent, that you got enough!!

From looking around at all your work, I was curious about the evolution of Skull and Shark. I know there are several approaches to creating characters and stories. As an artist, most of mine tend to flow from image to character development to story versus writers who usually flow from character to story (or story to character) to image. Did Skull and Shark stem from drawings of the subject matter/sketches to character development to story, or were there concepts something that began in your head? I love seeing how your style has developed over time and I love the rough style. I've liked the rough styles of Jae Lee and James O'Barr but yours is unique in that it is very evident that you have solid foundation of anatomy and are not merely utilizing the style as a mask. I appreciate your willingness to teach the artistic community and I have learned a lot just be listening to your critiques. Hope to see more of them in the future, in some form or another.

Thanks man, glad you got a chance to check out the videos :). For pretty much everything I do it starts with a title. So I basically just wrote skull and shark as a possible thing, then sketched them a couple times. Did this image here and then moved onto what it could possibly be. After that I created the location for the comic, some antagonists and general atmosphere. Once all that was done I thought about the end of whatever it would be and the beginning. Then filled in the middle :). But yea, I have a writing partner on this so after it was all outlined we fleshed out all the scripts. Now its just a matter of finishing paintings!

Interesting to see that work flow. So it was more of a determination to create your own IP or did it flow into something bigger because of your tendency to title everything before you begin? Do you follow this trend of titling even when freelancing? Also, I was thinking about your evolution as an artist today, which is very evident from looking at your gallery (btw, thank you! It gives positive hope to those of us who are where you once were. Please don't stop showing your progession.) and was wondering how you got to your current style? I was wondering when (or even if) you had a breakthrough moment where you went from unpolished artwork (early works) to this very solid, crisp and defining method. (TMNT, He-man, MtG, etc) And especially, I am curious about your current style. How did it evolve? Was it a conscious decision or (having seen your art process) was it a recognition of the artistic value of your unfinished work with a few tweaks? Were there any artists that were your influence in any of this? At any rate, I could go on and on... but you don't need to satisfy all of my curiosities. Although I do have more. :)

I never meant to make it a big IP, just a side project for fun. Over time though the project just got bigger and bigger as I got more excited to start something for myself. When I do freelance I don't title everything as most of that is already done for me. But yea, its easier for me to work from a title I like in my personal work just because it gives me a starting point. I never tried to really do anything for style, its basically just how I like painting. Sometimes I see other artists I love doing cool things and I'll borrow ideas from here and there which eventually make their way into my workflow. All I ever really did was study fundamentals and keep trying to improve on the previous images. Basically you just hope that it means your style and skill level will continue to evolve and grow. Even though sometimes it doesn't feel like that.

I appreciate the responses. Pretty cool to see the process behind the creativity. I look forward to seeing more of your work. I also hope to be see more of your speed paints and paint-overs. I learned so much from your corrections. Your work has really inspired me. I hope to eventually begin my own IP as well but don't feel like I'm solid enough as an artist. I'd love to just hole up for a month or several and just create art but with a wife, kids, school and work, that's not really feasible. :)
