Thermopylae

Thermopylae by p.b. wells It came to me half-asleep, that 3 a.m. dark hour between consciousness and the ditch. half dream, half curse. I was slouched in my chair inside my Fortress of Solitude, headlights from SR 9 flickering off empty bottles, the air thick with cannabis, Loreena McKennitt whispering through the cheap speaker haze. Then it hit. Thermopylae. the word dropped in my skull like a goddamn anvil. Thermopylae. The Sgiathanach Mariner’s Return

I wrote this song while driving home in a snowstorm just before Christmas doing 35 miles an hour on I-95 during white out conditions with a hundred and 30 miles to go; Hoping not to have an accident, and wondering what my wife was going to do without me, and I was feeling sorry for myself for a minute, my muscles were cramping and the heater in my work van was barely able to keep up with the snow. I then imagined that if I had it bad what was it like to be an ancient mariner away for months or years. My wife's ancestors being from Sgai, Skye in English and so it began. Homeward, Homeward bring me home to home and to heal [Verse 1] Ship’s canvas taut, she skims the brine He eyes the bow, the foam, the line Grey cliffs lift up and break the roar He minds the brae, the peat-smoke door [Chorus] Hameward, hameward, o’er the foam Hearth and bairns and ingle’s gloam Hameward, hameward, steer the keel Bring me hame to hame and heal [Verse 2] Norlan’ wind cuts through his coat Snaw-drift

It namely follows a fictional variation of the “Ancient Alien” or “Ancient Astronaut” Theory. In this universe, most of the known galaxy was once ruled by a race known as the “Anunnaki” (this is the only name they are known by). They created or modified many of the races in the galaxy. They ruled for a long time, then suddenly their whole empire collapsed for reasons that will be revealed later in the series. For now it's enough ...
