I experienced such a moment once on a sailing boat on the baltic sea near Kiel. On a perfectly calm sea, we were just drifting through a fog layer about two meters high, getting visibly thinner towards the sky. Having left the harbor, we had cut the motor to enjoy the silence while waiting for the first gusts of wind to catch in the sails. Then out of the fog, without a sound, came a submarine, passed by us within shouting distance and then slowly submerged while vanishing into the fog.
The absolute silence in which this happened was what made it most impressive.
