I've just started a new project: I Don't Understand is an educational YouTube channel about, so far, weird stuff. The first video is now up, and it's about crayfish and the bizarre way they survive shedding their defensive exoskeletons!…

If you head to you'll find links to various social media pages for I Don't Understand.

Respectful feedback is appreciated, as are likes and subscribes and whatever else you do with these things.

Take care!

Heroes of Science and general updates

Journal Entry: Mon Dec 17, 2012, 8:59 PM
Hello! I thought I'd be entirely uncharacteristic and actually update my journal, even to the extent of attempting to build a decent theme to go with it.

I'd like to thank everyone for their support, views, favourites and comments on Heroes of Science Action Figures and Heroes of Science Volumes I & II --

Heroes of Science Action Figures by datazoid   Heroes of Science Volumes I and II by datazoid

The response to these has been quite overwhelming, not only on DeviantART but on Facebook, Reddit, Twitter and some other more terrifying places the internets have to offer. Please continue to share the image with your friends!

Still no plans to make anything more of it though, it's just a picture.

I am considering making some more infographic-style things along a similar theme, but as my success rate for actually producing any of the projects I have in my head is quite low, I'm not going to go into any more detail for fear of a) disappointing anyone, and b) committing to something prematurely and being forced to follow through with it, probably leading to point "a" all over again.

Thanks again!

Heyhey. I haven't died - the rumours have been greatly exaggerated.

I've recently (six months ago) moved half-way across the country. I'm now much further south than I was before.

I'm struggling to get any enthusiasm and inspiration for photography again, which is disappointing me. I don't have as much spare time as I once had, and unfortunately taking happy snaps doesn't pay the bills.

I'm still around, I'm still occasionally doing things, and I still check in here when I can.

Take care, as always,

Hi. I'm atrociously, atrociously bad at updating blogs and journals. I apologise for this. Below, in point form, you will see some things that have happened recently.

• The Ridge Lightning Gallery closed down. It was open for six months, and was - by all measure - a success. It closed due to some problems with the building and the lease, not due to any reason involving the actual success or failure of the business venture itself. Thank you to all and sundry who supported the Gallery while it was open!
• Am working more and more doing various graphic design projects, which is fun.
• Saw Avatar 3D. Found it very pretty, but infuriatingly badly written. Overall, fun, though. Plus 3D without red and blue glasses is never a bad thing.

For now, that's all. Stay tuned for another update in, oh, say, 7 months or so.

Hello. First, housekeeping:

1. Standard apology for not having updated this journal in eleventy squillion years: I'm sorry I haven't updated this journal in eleventy squillion years. Everyone else updates their journals with interesting stuff, I just don't have much to say.

2. Shop is going well. It's paying its rent, which is a big deal for a small business that's only been open a couple of months.

3. Storm season hasn't started yet, so there're no new lightning photos.

In the "new news" department, we have:

- I bought a new dining table and chairs. OH YEAH.
- I'm reading Dawkin's latest book, and it's as spiffy as I expected.
- I recently bought an old Olympus OM 50mm f1.8 lens and an adaptor so I can whack it on my E-510, so you can readily anticipate a deluge of photographs of very small items enjoying themselves in the tiny slice of clarity between the front bokeh and the back bokeh.
- All is well.

Take care, drive carefully.

Hello, friends, followers and freaks.

I apologise for my recent lack of activity here. I've had a bunch of other things getting in my way, and old DeviantArt has fallen into the low priority basket.

Among other things, we're working on opening a new (physical, bricks and mortar) shop for selling lightning photographs in Lightning Ridge, which is consuming a huge amount of my time. If all goes to plan, that'll be open for business within a couple of weeks.

Otherwise, things are good, all is well and I don't really have anything exciting to report. Sorry to be such a boring person, but at least I don't have any bad news.

Thanks, folks.

Hello. Yesterday, I was honoured with a Daily Deviation for "From The Top"…

I'd like to thank kkart for featuring my image, and I'd like to thank each and everyone who commented, favourited and watched as a result of the feature. If I didn't get around to thanking you personally, I'm sorry. I appreciate all of the support! :D

Thank you!

Updating for updating's sake.

Journal Entry: Tue Mar 31, 2009, 10:47 PM
Hello. I'm updating my journal because the horrendously old entry on my profile page was annoying me as much as it probably annoyed everyone else.

The storm season is effectively over here, so there'll be no new lightning photographs for a few months. (Unless something wildly unexpected rolls in, but hey.) (EDIT 4/4: It did.)

In other news, my laptop battery has decided to expand like a pufferfish, and is (naturally) out of warranty, so now I'm out of pocket $200 for a new battery. Hoorah! I'm also running my Macbook off of AC power only, which means (for reasons I cannot fathom) that it's running at about 60% efficiency. It takes me twenty minutes to open Photoshop. And I have webpages to design. Sigh.

So yeah. Haven't updated this because not much has happened, and I'm really not the bloggy type. In fact, I hate blogs. And I hate the word "blog" even more. It sounds like a euphemism for something I don't think I want to know about.

Russ out!

  • Watching: Buffy. Season 7. Oh yeah.
  • Playing: Sporcle?
  • Eating: Chicken!
  • Drinking: P&N lemon lime and bitters. Cheap, but tasty!

How to guarantee I'll favourite your photo.

Journal Entry: Fri Jan 30, 2009, 11:14 PM
I was just poking through my favourites in a pathetic attempt at sorting them into categories -- I gave up, by the by -- when I discovered the formula you need to get me to instantly favourite a picture.

All you need to do is take a picture of a train, in Sydney, with lightning in the photograph. Oh, and HDR it to death. And put a nifty vignette around it.

And then you get to watch my head explode as I try and figure out which category to put it under.

Meanwhile, in other news:

Sun-Seeker has been kind enough to feature some of my (and Syndyne's ) pictures in a journal feature, which I appreciate endlessly. Thank you, sir!

Thank you to everyone who's supported my lil gallery here!

Here's a photo by Syndyne, for the heck of it:

Lehho and tidy muppelshacks!

So I changed the CSS for my journal, because I can. And now it looks like a darker version of DA's standard thingy. Yay, darker.

I've uploaded a lot of crap recently, thanks to everyone who's added and commented and what-have-you. I think I've almost exhausted my hard drive's useful content for the moment, I'll add more once I drag the camera out and do something useful with it.

Well, there you go. Yes, this was just an excuse to get the CSS thing happening. Hoorah, CSS!

Howdy. Sorry I don't update this thing often. I forget it's here.

Recently uploaded my attempt at Sydney's Central Station in 3D, which turned out fairly well, I think.

I'm working on some more rail-related projects. I'll post more when I can be bothered!

  • Reading: Dan Brown - Digital Fortress.
  • Watching: Lifestyle Channel.
  • Drinking: Cheap lemon squash. Mm. Cheap.
Not much to say, not much to do. Off to Tasmania again in a few weeks, might come back with some interesting photographs to show off. Then again, I might not.

Carry on, all.

I recently obtained a computer that isn't totally crap. So I can view DeviantART properly, now. And it's pretty spiffy. So yeah, I can upload stuff again. So stuff I shall upload.

I've also started a hobby of lightning photography, which has its own website here: :D

I'll be uploading some more crud soon. Enjoy!
  • Listening to: Nothing.
  • Reading: The Lost World: Jurassic Park
  • Watching: Star Trek: Enterprise
It just took me the better part of five minutes to locate the journal link. Whee.

So I'm kind of here and kind of not. I don't like DA much, but hey. Comments on art is kinda nice, and there're few places better to get it.

All I need now is a computer that can handle the format of the pages. :|
I'm still kind of alive, guys. Sorry for the absence, I've been ridiculously busy. And I'm a bit annoyed at the popups on DeviantART, so I admit to kind of avoiding it.

I've been working on a close-to-massive project, which I hope to somewhat collaborate with the likes of Anemovatis and fraxyl on, hopefully producing something that'll a ) rock the world, and b ) bring a bunch of people from all over the place together into something remarkable.

One does love mystery, doesn't one? :)

I'll try to keep up. No promises, though. uberLeem!

I'm off on a seven week vacation, travelling around Australia for a while. So you can expect a deluge of photographic crappery when I get back!

In the mean time, join my forum ( ), peruse my website ( ), laugh at Flat Pickled Cap ( ), admire the work of Fraxyl ( and ) and take care of yourselves.

In the mean time, I'll be experimenting madly with my digital camera, in great anticipation of abusing the architecture of Australia's three eastern capitals (and one southern one) with my own brand of pixellated goodness.

Be devious to each other. uberLeem!
- d a t a z :groucho: i d - trains.

And I've recently purchased a digital camera worth the gross national debt of a small country, and a scanner that's so cheap it couldn't scan something easily scannable if provided with an instruction manual in every known language including Klingon, and guided through the process by it's inventor. But regardless, it works. And scan, I do. And from this, thus. A deluge of imagery.

But anyhoo. I'm making less sense than usual.. which is a challenge.
