From Coward To Courageous

Antoine D'Coolette.

Who would have thought that he was one of my favourite characters of all time in the Sonic Archie comic series?

I'm especially happy with how Antoine has evolved to a responsible, brave and matured individual in the series and thanks to Ian Flynn (the writer) and the various artists that depict Ian's narrative they were able to capture his 'evolution'.

Congrats to Antoine for also marrying one of his fellow freedom fighters - Bunnie Rabbot. They make a great couple.

Antoine used to be portrayed a coward (hence the title) but look at him now. He's grown up. He's a man. He's all the better for those who have followed his past - I absolutely love the contrast between his past and his present.

Antoine even defends without fear for those in his team (even more surprising when he does it to Sonic - when Sonic usually is the one saving his ass or teasing him for his cowardice and foolishness - please see Sonic Archie #204 for a visual reference).

Who here agrees that Antoine has grown? This is pretty much a reflection of that through my art. May those Antoine fans watchin' me will enjoy this.

Am so glad that at least one of the characters was allowed to grow, change and improve. Thank you for capturing a snapshot of this progress so well!

I'm not a big fan of Archie but I admit that Antoine is one of the things they did right, considering how one dimensional and annoying he was in SatAM the difference between his cartoon self and new one in the comics is like the difference between night and day.

I totally agree! I love his growth, that's what makes his recent sacrifice all that more significant in the series. Talk about a 180 from the early days. What I really like is how Sonic, who always used to make fun of him, and often but heads over Sally, now respects him like family. The Archie guys have done a great job with his story. Hate to see it come to an end, let's see if he survives.

He has changed without a doubt from the old days, back then he was more of a joke than anything and now you can't help but take him seriously, especially after he threw himself at Metal Sonic just before the 'bot self destructed

This is great. Antoine is pretty much my favorite character as well. I haven't been able to read many old comics, however. It's sad. But this rocks ^^

God bless character development. I always hated how Antoine was the butt-monkey of the series, I thought it was a waste...

... then he gave Geoffrey St. John's a free face adjustment. After that, we learn his history (and that's one big pile of shit he had to gulp down).

I haven't been too far in the series (didn't even start the Eggman saga), but he surely beats it every time!

Actually, i could not agree more :)

In my youth my favourite character was sonic, and perhaps tails. However, Antoine always had a soft spot for me :) and i always wanted to see him prove his worth in the television series, and grow into a capable warrior.

When i just started reading the archie comics, i was overjoyed.

Not only did they keep true to the complexity of the characters (such as sonic and tails fight it off in 178 and 179 because of turmoil) but they even developed them further :)

The Archie comics are a joy to read, but even more so since i saw Archies character development.

They didn't just turn him into a hero, they gradually made him pit against dilemma's and allowed the story to make changes in his life. This made him into a heroic and brave person.

He still has cowerdly tendensies, but i'm glad he has, because not only does it keep true to his original character, but it also shows how much he is overcomming them, especially for his love Bunnie Rabbot (208) She even mentions it to him :)

The marriage between them two was one of the highlights of the series, and i think both are equally lucky :)

So to put it short: YES he has grown, and they have greatly shown that in the series :) I think he is currently my number one favourite archie character as well :) sorry Sonic, you are much more complex in the comic then in any other universe (which i love) but Antoine is the most complex and interesting :)

As bunnie said: "count mah lucky stars i got him" at first i was wondering if that was true compared to other males in the comic, but now i believe it is ;)

I totally agree with you there. Ant has grown up, and he's one of the characters that I have loved watching mature. I'm so thankful that Ian has taken the time to really develop him over the years. Of all the freedom fighters, it seems like Ant has had the most development as time and writers have gone by.

Amazing tribute to an awesome character!

Of all the characters in the Archie-verse 'toine is the one who has grown/evolved the most. His personality change is almost bipolar it's so drastic.

While I did appreciate the cowardly Antoine for what he was worth (which wasn't much) I really like how the writers have decided to change him over the years. Good character development is the bedrock of good story.

Great pic. The action is well documented in Ant's pose. I also appreciate the :wtf: look on Sonic's face. :D

I also love the freestyle way you color. "outside the lines" but not too much. ;)
