Description
This is a Japanese inspired origami paper doll is adorned with a kimono outfit standing before the Kanji characters for "Good Fortune" that I just finished making. Paper dolls have a long tradition in Japan. The art of making paper was introduced from China to Japan around 6 AD and paper dolls came into being in Japan in the 1500’s. The first paper dolls were mainly fetish spiritual idols or children’s toys and later became more decorative objects. The dolls typically portrayed different aspects of life.
I have long been inspired by and love the art and culture of Japan. As an artist , I love to mix and be inspired by the artistry, elements and styles of many different cultures and nationalities. My particular affinity for Japanese art often has me deeply worried about inadvertent cultural appropriation. When does cultural appreciation cross over into cultural appropriations? I would really like to hear others views on this. Would an item such as this be inappropriate for me to sell or profit from? What are the lines ethically that you draw as an artist when borrow from other cultural art styles? Please leave thoughtful and kind comments below.
