Why is it that in Sun/Moon Pikachu is the only Pokémon that has the same voice it has in the anime (that I've seen so far) and the rest only make animal noises? It should be all or none.

I actually prefer the animal noises. Because they ARE animals. I just don't like the idea that they all just say their names and can't talk otherwise. That has never made sense to me, even when I was a kid. If they can say their names then why can't they talk? And Team Rockets Meowth doesn't count.

What makes this even more egregrious is that in Sun and Moon there's specifically models for an Ash-Pikachu with all the hats Ash has worn in the show through from Kanto-Alola so like even if they wanted Ikue Otani to voice Pikachu at some point they clearly could've just relegated that cry to those forms and leave regular Pikachu alone (it's possible, look at Oricorio) but they're still obsessed with separating Pikachu from the lot, which I still think is a really bad move. I don't care if it's the series mascot, it's a Pokemon like the rest, they all animal cry their way out, Pikachu should too. Unless you're going to give every one of them a cry where they say their name they should all be animalled unless you're specifically going to place ash-pikachu in like that.

Of course, this has been happening since gen 6 so our complaints become really invalid really quickly so...

Well Chatot can talk naturally, but only because it can mimic what they say.

The answer for why Pikachu gets special treatment is the obvious "series mascot" thing but as per why Pokemon in the anime say their names may have to do with cultural differences. Children in Japan will often refer to animals by the animal's onomatopoeia, like calling a dog Wanwan instead of Inu or a cat Nyanya instead of Neko.

So do I, but it does explain the anime's weird direction. But hey, at least it's only Pikachu getting the "special treatment". Now I'm curious to know if you have a favorite Pokemon cry. Mine's Spearow, it's so cute!

Rockruff really does have a cute cry, bias or not. The animal cries do sound like they have more personality than the anime cries.

The Pikachu voice thing was carried over from gen 6, and the only reason I got is just that Pikachu's the mascot so he gets special treatment.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking too but I still think it should be all or none.

Well there's an episode where he wanted to be more like a human so he trained himself to learn how to walk on his hind legs and learn how to speak when overhearing a class learning English. He even taught himself how to read.
