I'm never going to let Microsoft live that down.

What ever happened to that whole "forward compatibility" thing anyway?
They made up a new stupid buzz word, and everyone seems to have completely forgotten about it.
Heck, do you remember all of the features they promised for the PS4? Such as the light at the back of the controller being used by the system to adjust the position of players playing splitscreen?
So much bull crap that's long since been forgotten.

Because of the title I was thinking Doug was gonna reveal to Steve  that forwards compatibility is real if the next system is backwards compatible, as the games CAN cross with the 5TH system. :XD:

That... is actually a good idea.
Damn, why didn't I think of that!

...

That would've actually been great in my original Forwards Compatibility comic from years ago. :hmm:

How would that have worked as a joke, though?

Well Doug could have said something stupid, and then Steve could have responded with how backwards compatibility technically means the previous system has forwards compatibility akin to what you said earlier. Thus negating Doug's stupid argument.

Or Doug could have based his entire argument about how forwards compatibility works, by describing how backwards compatibility works, and Steve facepalming at the end in the sheer stupidity of it all.

Wow that's actually really good.
Normally, I feel like it's really hard to use someone else's joke and make it your own, but I guess between how obvious that joke is and how great you are at making these jokes work, it was totally workable. :D

I've been at this for nine years. At some point, you learn how to come up with jokes based on anything.
It does help a lot that this joke was kind of obvious though. :)

Yeah, but we both know not quite, 'cause we both know some ideas just aren't funny enough. :la: When you're required to pull them off a list, there will definitely be ones that aren't funny. :bored:

Oh yeah, definitely. Some ideas just can't be turned into decent jokes.
That's why I have more than a few unfunny and terrible comics.
And some ideas just shouldn't be turned into jokes. But that's an entirely different topic.

Was there a comic where Doug said PS4 would be forward compatible? I noticed times before when Doug said something happened before, it did happen in an earlier strip.

In some ways, broken promises on features are good. Everyone who's passionate about the game features they're making shoot for the moon, but only idiots and the greedy open their mouths and blab about features they can't deliver yet. :XD: Well, SOMETIMES sane folks do that, but it's mostly a bad idea to get people thinking like that like they did with No Man's Sky. :XD:

Forwards compatibility? I'll believe that when I see it. :judge:

I guess it's not enough of a leap to call it PS5 :D Also more $$$ for less work I guess *shrugs*
I'm totally not the audience for buying a PS4 Pro, I have a PS4 and it does just fine.

Wow I totally don't remember the controller back light thing omfg

Also, no idea how Microsoft is doing with XBox not really having any exclusives. Surely Ps4 is the better option for gamers now (+ buying a Switch alongside it).

Same here. I have absolutely no reason to buy a PS4 Pro. I don't have a 4k TV, I don't care about silky smooth 60fps (probably because I spent my childhood playing games at less than 30fps), and I don't have the money to buy the same console twice anyway.

Yeah, I'm not surprised you don't remember the controller back light thing. I don't even remember when and where I heard that from. I just remember following every little detail about the new consoles of that generation, and dreading every feature they announced. It's amazing how well I can remember random trivial facts, and how easily I forget things I HAVE to remember.

As far as I know (but don't quote me on any of this), the Xbox One is doing better in America, while the PS4 is doing better in almost all other countries.
As for which one is better... Exclusives usually only matter if you're interested in those exclusive games. Also the Xbox does have exclusives, it's just that most of their exclusives are also available on the PC.
Personally, I still think the PS3 is a better console than both of them.

Rembering random details sounds like a useful ability
Hm, I see, I guess PS3 exclusives may not appeal to everyone :D Sport and shooters are enough for some, and perhaps branching out to other genres and styles can be a difficult leap for ppl too. (I have no idea tho since I spent my childhood playing all types of games).

I rather like the Playstation exclusives, but the thing about exclusives is that if you don't own the console the game is exclusive to, you usually won't know what you're missing. I doubt any Xbox owners even care about Ratchet and Clank, much like how I don't care about Halo.

My childhood was spent playing games on bootleg compilation discs. As such, I grew up playing a lot more games than most people, but a lot of those games are also quite obscure. Not only that, but I seem to have grown up with games that were released five to ten years prior to what most people were playing at those times. So it's next to impossible to talk to anyone the same age as me about games, since we grew up with completely different games.

Oh wow that an interesting difference with your childhood games!

I grew up with DOS, so there was a lot of 100-in-1 shareware CDs I had when I was little :) Jazz Jackrabbit was my fave tho!
What's your fave fro your childhood era? :)

Oh wow, having to choose my favourite game would be like having to choose my favourite child (if I had children).
So a list will have to do. :D
Jazz Jackrabbit 2
Curse of Monkey Island (my version didn't have voices, and now I play all adventure games with subtitles turned on)
Day of the Tentacle (this one did have voices)
Deus Ex
Thief: The Dark Project
Seven Kingdoms: Ancient Adversaries (I bought this one, after playing the original one on one of those compilation discs)
Age of Empires (I actually bought this one after playing a demo that came with the Windows 98 disc)
Star Wars Racer (because who ever writes the full name)
Dungeon Keeper 1 and 2 (I bought these)

And that's just the PC games. I also had a Mega Drive emulator and a SNES emulator with a bunch of roms on discs (we didn't have internet you see). I always preferred the SNES games though, despite the SNES emulator lagging on my computer, having a lot more games for the Mega Drive emulator, and the majority of the SNES games being in Japanese.
Some of the games I love from there include:
Super Mario World
Super Mario RPG
Daibakushou Jinsei Gekijou: Ooedo Nikki
Dokapon 3-2-1 - Arashi o Yobu Yuujou
Might and Magic III
Uncharted Waters II: New Horizons
Pirates Gold
Rock and Roll Racing
Magical Drop II
Warriors of the Eternal Sun
Secret of Mana (I love this game)

Then of course there were the games my dad had on his Amiga before he threw it away. But that's going so far back that I don't remember that many. But I do remember really enjoying Dizzy.

That's all of the most memorable games from the top of my head. There's plenty more which I think deserve to be on this list, but I'd have to sit down and really think about them. And besides, I think the games I can list from the top of my head, are probably closer to being my all time favourites than the ones I have to try and remember.

And this list is probably less than a twentieth of the games I had available to me. Which is why I have to list so many.

That's quite a list!
I think I only played 4 or so out of all of them :D

Well when you've played as many games as I have, you can't help but build up a huge list of favourites.
The number of games I've played is definitely in the thousands. Probably very close to ten thousand by now. And most people haven't even heard of the majority of them.
