Dawn of Consciousness-enlarged by danpurcell Dawn of Consciousness-enlarged by danpurcell
The theme of this is the birth of creation (or human creation at least). The hieroglyphics to the left say the title whilst the codes across the top are a section of the human genome and some of the zodiac signs. The human embryo to the top right is drawn in the same texture as some of the rocks to the bottom right symbolising the unity of organic matter. The clear light in its palms shows both the clear light we experience at death and at birth. The eye and the colour spectrum within the temple suggest the idea of how perception is shown by the human mind. The bindi on the hidden Jesus to the left (with the flower as its eye) shows the universality of religion and how this is sometimes hidden behind the fabrics of social life and the bindi can also be seen as mars in its proximity to earth (within the pupil).

oh wow, I have been cruising your incredible gallery, and this one is by far my most favourite :) What time of coloured pencils do you use? Do you have a particular preference of do you just use an eclectic assortment of different kinds? :yoda:

i like this piece as well altho its a bit cheesy with the eye. i use caran d'ache and supra color ( i know prismacolors very popular but ive never seen them in the uk (i havent looked too hard to be fair- ive had the set ive got at the moment since i was 11 and don't often need to get new pencils). i find it easy to blend these 2 as they work well together. occasionally i need to use unblendable pencils if i havent got the colour i want but i try to do this as little as possible.

I like your use of representational elements in what is essentially an abstract piece. That's an angle I hadn't considered.

Amazing. I've not seen a piece so well planned and arranged in a while. I love the meaning behind the piece, although I'm torn between having wanted to be told and wanting to think about it for myself. Since, you shared your reasons behind the symbolism with the viewer though; I can now look at the piece more objectively. Of course, even though this piece is full of meaning I still feel more drawn to the texture and colors you used than anything else.

cheers- appreciate the thought out comment. i spent quite a while internally composing this piece. i just came across the original plan for it today which i didnt even know existed, i think the plan was good in its own right and almost looked like a different piece. my new piece should be done next week, its not as 'good' as this in my opinion but it may be interesting none the less...

I'm gobsmacked, this is really brilliant. I could only wish to do stuff like this.
You have some really interesting ideas, too.

I'm not good enough to offer advanced critique on something millions of times better than my own work. Sorry.

beautiful so much to look at so much to pay attention to... my only sujestion is if its posible to find something more universal to represent universal religion the jesus, thats only one icon of representing a higher truth... :shrugs: but the image does represent in certain sense a better understanding of humanity. awesome work it truely is something that can be looked at for a long time.

thats a valid suggestion. its good u took time to read the summary. i did try to include a few different religions/ spiritutal beliefs in this piece. i was going to draw ganeeshas arms overlapping and coming into the picture but i couldnt put it into the design. i also tried to show reincarnation through the embryo being made of the same material as the rocks and the suggestion of the zodiac signs. the bindi on the jesus tried to encomplass more continents into the equation. i also tried to fit in some jewish symbolism but at the end of the day the puiece was already starting to get overloaded with ideas.

i sujest that you may want to do some research into baha'i ( [link] ) they are a preaty unversalistic religion and may have some symbols that would help your search for something that is broad.

Im jewish so i can give you a sujestion on a really good symble to use. its the chi. its a hebrew word that is both the number 18 and the word for life. its read from right to left. its the two letters in the center of this drawing [link]

this is the aleph bet (alpha bet) in hebrew so you can spot out better what the letters are.
[link]=pyKuW5LS3OoJ:&tbnh=125&tbnw=101& start=4&;p rev=/images%3Fq%3Dhebrew%26hl%3Den%26lr% 3D%26sa%3DG

it is interesting to note that all hebrew letters are based off of different shapes that flaims form, so its very good to make a fire/letter conection when drawing out the letters.

keep up the awesome work (sorry if i went over knowledge you already had) i can direct you towards other sembles, as well as some farely universal symbles. for example the infinity symble is a lot more universal of a symble religiosly then most people suspect. its formed from the first letter in hebrew Aleph, and the first number in the hindu/muslim numeral system, zero. originaly looking like this [link]=PhD.php

you can see how it progressed later into what the modern infinity symble is.

thanks for the info. that stuff was all new to me, nothing id researched previously! if i ever do a sequal to the 'dawn of consciousness' theres a good chance id use some of the links uve posted. at the moment the sequal isnt in the near future as im going to do a scientific/math influenced piece which at most will quote the tibetan book of the dead as its sole 'spiritual' reference. but seeing as the d.o.c seems to be quite popular on the whole theres no reason why there may not be a follow up which includes the aspects of modern life and religion which were missed out on the first installment.
