In the RIFT Create a Colossus Contest, we asked you to design the biggest and baddest boss you could imagine. We've seen some of the creepiest, strangest, and most horrific monsters imaginable, and we love them!

The judges have narrowed down the entries to 25 semi-finalists. From these 25, the final three winners will be selected by Trion's creative team!

Once judging is completed and the final three winners are announced, all 25 semi-finalists will receive a copy of RIFT and a 3 month Premium Membership to deviantART. The three winners will be receiving cash, Wacom tablets, and other prizes.

Read Contest Article Read Official Rules Browse All The Entries

Please note: If during the finalist judging, any one of the semi-finalists becomes ineligible or is disqualified under the Official Rules, the semi-finalist judges will replace the disqualified entry with a new selection to be considered by the final judges.

It seems to me that anyone complaining about this contest are just shitty because their entry didn't get chosen

i like 2 or three from here, Touch of Death, Air, The Magister, and Death Colossus, (lol was 4) but i'm also kind of dissapointed, i saw great designs that were a lot better than some of these, at least in idea, don't want to think that it was more worthy the finished details, than the colossus originality or the idea behind it.

Anyway, congratulations to the winners. Well Done, and also great contest !!!

great entries... but sadly it turned out to be another popularity contest in the end, the dA staff were probably too lazy to browse through the thousands of entries and just picked form the first 5 pages of the overall most popular entries, thus giving the "not so knows" dA artists an unfair chance and the "already popular" dA artists more fame and of course better stuff to use to make their art. so in the end, it all came down to who had more watchers than the actual concept :(

Don't go and complain about how the judges do their work. Your theory doesn't make sense because you've made the assumption that all the well established artist were on the first few pages, which is incorrect, just because an entry is 'popular' doesn't mean that it's from an established artist, it just happens to be, that better, more estblished artists produce better work

whatever :) this is past news anyway. plus 2 of the 3 winners were actually my top pics so... not complaining anymore.

And another thing. Your fatty glutton has been done to death in many other games. It's cliche. It's just a fat humanoid with blood stains. It also doesn't look particularly "colossal". It could be 6 ft tall or 600 ft tall. Likewise your evil demon with ram's horns is a tired cliche that dates back to the middle ages. I think lack of originality in your concepts is what did you in rather than some nasty politics or incompetent judges. I'd say the judges made the right call in your case. Just my opinion mind you.

i wasn't talking about my submissions not being chosen, i've seen some pretty cool concepts by other people, in the contest. i've played a ton of games, not to mention most of the top mmo's and i know exactly what would look cool to battle against (again, i'm not referring to my submissions). there were some of the top 25 that i totally liked, but i'm just saying that what's the use of joining a contest if what you've worked for very hard wasn't even judged?

oh and btw, making an account today, just to reply to my post, isn't very cool.

well how could they browse 1000 of pictures, and not to mention that mayority of that arts that were submited were( honestly crap) , example i saw a entry idk Death collosus when the artist just drew and colored a "DICK" literaly xD

i know what you mean i'm not really mad at the judges or the top 25, it's just i know tons of people who joined who took hours to make their submissions, even if they can't draw but still tried their best to express what they wanted to see in the game, but in the end, their entries might not even have been judged.(i'm not referring to my self or to this particular contest too). i know lots of people just submitted unneeded stuff, but think about this,if you can't draw coz you have no pen tablet, and the only way you could get one is to join the contest, you try your hardest to draw on paper, scan it, try coloring it digitally with a mouse, spend literally hours trying to perfect it, then in the end, it didn't even get judged, then you found out that the one of the 3 winner, has tons of tablets and he just keeps them stacked somewhere gathering dust even if they're still usable, how would you feel?

all i'm saying is lots of people who joined have talent, but not all of them have the tools to produce what they really want to express. being judged and saying they did a good job is enough to rise their spirits, and give them courage to try to join another contest in the future again.

btw, who ever colored and drew that dick :D, is just submitting a picture of himself ;)

So your position is that a commercial video game company running an art competition for a new game character is making a poor decision when they consider the popularity of a particular effort with a broad range of people on this website? Or maybe you're saying that the judges should be considering mediocrity as well as excellence when choosing finalists. Interesting logic.

I'll bet you're miffed that your high school football team wasn't invited to the Superbowl. And you're no doubt puzzled that your baking soda volcano project wasn't nominated for the Nobel prize in science.

Why not show some maturity and congratulate the people who were selected for their hard work and credit the judges for a job well done in making the tough choices from a lot of great entries? If you need to belittle the artists who were selected and the judges to help justify your own failure, do it in your own head, not publicly. Such whining does not flatter the whiner.

Better yet, spend your time trying to understand what made these entries stand out with the judges and start working on your own skills. Maybe you'll have better luck next time.

PS- I know at least one of the finalists created a Deviant account and submitted a Colossus only days before the contest ended. That person is not a "pro". They are a student in their teens. They are not famous. They don't have legions of Deviant fans. Quite the contrary. They were completely unknown on this site prior to the Rift contest.

If only everyone on this site could think this way. Sadly it isn't . Art and it's creativity should never be viewed as a popularity contest. To the people that won, I applaud them.

Hey, one moment, am I wrong or there's only one air colossus - so he wins right now! - in this selection? LMAO!

some beautiful skillful entries. I have to agree that the originality level for most of these isn't the best: I am not an avid video game player and I feel like I've seen most of these already.
I am very glad however that skill level was REALLY taken into consideration, I think all the semi-finalists deserve to be there. This was a superb contest, I saw so many amazing pieces (some of which didn't make top 25)
