DeviantArt’s Android app is now dropping support for devices running Android v4.4 or lower. This does not apply to the mobile version of the website accessed through your mobile browser.

Old versions of Android have security vulnerabilities that make it difficult for us to continue supporting. Disabling support for old versions of Android ensures the secure transfer of data from your device to DeviantArt’s servers.

DeviantArt is compliant with the Payment Card Industry security standards, and new policies require sites and applications to drop support for older, less secure encryption methods. It’s likely that many other apps and services will be dropping support for older versions of Android in the coming months as well.  Google itself has already dropped support for these devices because of security vulnerabilities.

FOR AFFECTED USERS

Android v4.4 is nearly 5 years old.  As a result, this affects a smaller number of users on older devices that haven’t been upgraded to the latest operating system. If you’re on a device that supports Android 5 or above, we encourage you to upgrade.

If you’re using an affected device, you may run into issues viewing images or logging in. In the future — along with other major apps — you may no longer be able to download the DeviantArt app from an older device.

If you're unable to upgrade, we recommend creating a home screen shortcut to the browser version of DeviantArt.

DeviantArt’s Android app is now dropping support for devices running Android v4.4 or lower.

Push notifications still doesn't work on my cell phone ( Android v. 6) and my Samgung Tablet (v.8) but still works on my old iPad 2, what is going on? I used this app only because of the push notifications and you guys remove it for Android users? Why don't you make an exclusive app for push notifications instead? This is really annoying.

I reinstalled it today because I updated my android from 4.7 (because wasn't working since MONTHS ago when you say it was until 4.4) to 7.1.1 and I still don't receive a shit. Is a really useless App...

CAN'T YOU JUST MAKE A SECOND APP JUST FOR PUSH NOTIFICATIONS?

Sincerely, just reading coments for an hour will make you realise that a low % of people uses it as their main device to submit and such... the highest % of the users only use it for the notifications and they don't work from a lot ago. To have two apps would be more clever, practical and faster to run for the smartphone, since we would get the one we are interested in only instead of having stuff we don't need/want.

That is precisely what I think! I also only used it for the push notifications because it was helpful to know when people commented on my art or when my friends sent me notes, but now that it has stopped working, the app is completely useless! I'm really, really annoyed with this!

I only used it for the Push notifications, since the rest can be done in the computer or through the smartphone's browser... why can't you make a smaller app ONLY for the push... I will not buy a new mobile just for this! You could even create a desktop thing for the push notifications. I am sure it exists, will look for it right after I send this message, but I doubt is from you, is probably from someone who needed it and made it.

I understand you want to be professional and whatever, but this app has been kinda useless from the very first day. You first don't care about the bugs in the desktop version and now this. You know? Your Core users keep paying for their privileges, you DO have cash to invest...

Please think about it because the only thing you are earning here are haters. To progress is fine, but there are ways and ways to do it...

There is actually an extension on Chrome where you can get notifications, but since I use my cell phone more since I work in an office most of the day, the mobile notifications where more helpful and now they're GONE! I also don't understand how they didn't make an individual app for push notifications till now! By the way, this Chrome extension of course wasn't made by the dA team, obviously.

Yeah ;w; I use the Firefox one~ but if we go out is useless xD and yeah, OBVIOUSLY is not them who is fixing the problems...

I still wait for a bug fix in the messages really.. I wait for it since... +5 years ago? A lot really. If you reply FROM YOUR NOTIFICATIONS PAGE a message that is in your main page, if you go to see the message in the main page you will see is out of place xD we can make a try if you want. Will message you in your main page, but if you reply, do it from your notifications page and will see what happens :<

I am Core and really, I don't feel supported. Is worth it because of features they give like polls and more coding, but NOT for the treat tu the customer really v__v

Yeah, it is useless when we get out of the browser.

I'm also waiting for this. It's funny that Apple devices still get notifications normally. I, as an android user, feel very prejudiced because of it.

I don't understand what you asked me. You mean in the app? I don't reply in the app, I only do that in my computer

Yeah, that really sucks!

The people insulting DA for this... it's so funny. It's like people on Windows XP complaining that new games require Windows 7 64-bit. Or Mac users on X 10.0 (Aqua) bitching that nothing for 10.11 works for them.

I have Android v.6.0.1, but as of last week my DA app glitched up and then it wouldn't load things. I tried to uninstall the app, because it suddenly kept logging me out, but it caused my screen to shut down and my screen launcher stopped working. I would be forced to shut the whole device off and reload only for the app to still not have me logged in and the issue repeat itself. Right now I have to use the Web Browser App to use DA, but it's really finicky at times.
What I would like to also understand is why DA hasn't released an update for the Mobile App since February of 2017. (And for iPhone users, it hasn't been updated since June of 2016.) But the Browser version of DA is up to date with 2018.

And while on the subject, they should be held accountable to fix the stuff they break. After the Blank Notes issue from an auto-update in April, they should realize how important having the app up to date is important too because it was the only way to use Notes until they fixed whatever they messed up.

Indeed! My lovingly cared for tablet, that I received from family at Christmas, can no longer use the app. Considering that it's my very first tablet, being dropped from service hurts.

That said, even on my newer tablet, the same problems I've long complained about persist.
There are just some things that you need to use the browser version for, or you can't be done easily or at all. Notifications, for instance, only display vertically when looking at images. No grid.

The sad thing is, I understand. I don't like it. But I understand that the digital products move or are pushed fast to create demand.
I just miss the days where you could legally buy products that you could reasonable expect to mention in your Will, or give to your grandchildren as a housewarming gift, or just expect to last a decade or two.
Nowadays you're lucky if the car lasts to its 3rd decade. Let alone anything to do with computers.

For instance, my parents recently had to get a newer dryer. Oh, the old didn't stop working completely, it just needed a new belt to connect the motor and the drum. They couldn't find a replacement belt, because it had been so long since any had been produced.😲 Come to find out, Mom bought it used over 30 years ago, at a garage sale for... I'm sorry, I don't think I'm remembering correctly, but all I can remember is that it sold for 25 CENTS. I'm thinking that is wrong, but I know that it's considerably less than five dollars. I'll edit ltr.
It was fairly heavily built, as I recall from helping to move it out of the basement. And I thought it was amazing that the ladder my Dad uses to get up on the roof, was a gift from my grandfather, who bought it new almost 70yrs ago now.

✌😇✝

I wondered why I couldn't see any images on the app. I thought it was a setting I had screwed up. So now this makes sense. But if I'm using Chrome on my antiquated phone I can see everything. I'll just delete the app. Regardless of the version of my phone the app is wonky anyways. I liked using the browser version better even when DA did support my phone.

Are you serious?!? I spent a whole week trying to troubleshoot only to come to this?! On behalf of the people who use Android Jellybean 4.3 like I do, I'd like to virtually flip you off. This is an abomination of the highest order and I'm considering deleting my account because of this! It is completely unfair and unmitigated to just drop my access to the app so suddenly! Also, it is a complete insult that your only response is, "well then get a new phone..." some of us are poor and can't afford a new phone and your alienation of said people is, without a doubt, unacceptable! I have been a faithful user of this site for years and this is the thanks I get!? Kicked to the curb!?!? That WILL NOT stand!!!

You're not alone. I think it's stupid that a community so dedicated to making themselves look "professional" forces their membership to spend money on their own greed. Sounds like Facebook. We could boycott them but I doubt it will do much difference. You should read up on the History of Deviant Art especially about the yellow alien that huge debacle. It's possible the past litigation fees is what's driving their need to make us all pay for their mistakes.
