Was this ship in direct lineage with the Sea Vampire?  And what is that hatch next to the pilot's canoply?

It's the observers cockpit.

Fantastic shot. Wondering, is that an aerial or a refueling probe on the left wing?

Inboard is the IFR probe; outboard on both wings are pitot tubes.

You see the white "cut here" outline to the pilot's right? That's a Weapon System's Operator position (upgraded from "navigator" because he was responsible for operating the interception radar as well as navigating). It's known as the "coal hole" because it's dark in there (and needed to be to make the CRT radar usable).

I knew it had a crew of two and the other guy sat in there but I didn't know that's what his job was.  Thanks for the info

No problem. Oh yes, and as to the design, it was a major evolution of the dH Vampire/Venom (2 engines, and supersonic).

She is certainly unusual, but drop dead gorgeous in my eyes, and that's coming from somebody who has a penchant for the turny things up front on aircraft. But hey, look what manufacturer's name this aircraft bares. Beauty was most definitely something de Havilland understood.

I've been waiting a very long time to get this shot, I've had nothing but bad luck with her over the years. I never seem to catch her in good lighting either due to backlit skies or bad weather. Then came last year at Shoreham, she was already in the circuit waiting for her display in beautiful blue skies, but sadly she was due just after the Hunter and of course the airshow was rightly cancelled after the incident. Finally nailed it though, it would have been better if it wasn't so hazy but I'm not complaining. :D

de Havilland always had some of the most beautiful designs.  The Comet racer is definitely one of my all time favorites.

The shot looks fantastic
