Description
From the 5th through 7th grade, we lived in military housing near Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
My friends and I would play soldiers in the nearby woods, which still held the remnants of military training camps from World War II.
While we fired bottle rockets (out of empty hairspray bottles) at each other, we'd navigate between sunken foxholes and trenches (usually buried under pine needles), and around abandoned buildings (of which only the foundations remained).
I always felt those old buildings harbored a sinister aura, and imagined they had secret chambers whose access was blocked by piles of fallen leaves.
In my story "Fort Bragg," I bring to light the reality of hidden underground lairs and government conspiracies, all discovered by an unwitting child.
Jack Bantry featured the story in his Splatterpunk Zine, and I republished it in my expanded version of Down Higways in the Dark...by Demons Driven.
