Rolleiflex by dangeruss Rolleiflex by dangeruss
Had a slow day today...

I wanted to pick a relatively complex subject then research, model, texture and render it in one day - as accurately as possible. This is probably not 100% accurate to any specific model of Rolleiflex camera as I just grabbed as many reference photos as I could, and incorporated the most interesting elements.

Modeled in AutoCAD, and 3D Studio Max. Rendered with 3D Studio MAX using Vray. Textures and touchups accomplished in Photoshop.

If there's enough response, I may upload this model as a 3D resource. You'd need MAX 2008 to use it though.

The model looks excellent and the render is photo-realistic.  Did you ever make the model available for download anywhere?

IMO this is the best work you've ever done, though I may be a tad biased :giggle:

Absolutely stunning, there's a good chance I would go and buy MAX just so I could have a better look at it <3 Simply amazing. Well done! :+favlove:

I have just one remark - the top lense doesn't have any aperture blades, on the real thing.

This would be a kickass icon for iPhoto on OS X ;)

No shit? Didn't know that, but now that I think about it... that makes sense. Thanks - but don't look for an update.

It's ok, I don't expect one.

Quite frankly I'm amazed that you managed to get such a realistic TLR in such little time.

I know from making my k800i model how time and effort goes into creating such a detailed and accurate model as this. Full respect to you for that.

I've never used a TLR camera. Looks complicated.

Well, you haven't got any built-in light measuring device, so you'll probably need a external light measurer if you haven't got a very good eye for such things. Film is relatively expensive too, being 12mm in my case.

More of a neat collectible than a daily use-camera. ^^

You created and textured in one day what would take me a week, and mine would not look nearly this close to reality... :+fav:

aaaah damn you !!! i am in the process of modeling the same camera ^^
:w00t!: - i am 80% done with the camera itself but intend to do the belt and satchel too.
As far as i can tell the details look really good although as you already told they are not absolutely correct, but it's only a few minor details. I can tell because a friend has such a Rolleiflex and he lent it to me for the time being. When i saw it i fell in love with the nostalgic design but i also was amazed about all the ingenious mechanical solutions that were incorporated. From case lock, to belt fastener to lens mechanics all are little miracles of machenics. If u ever get one into your hand take time to play around with it ! ;D
Anyways, I wanted to compliment you on the render - absolutely gorgeous! And the materials are just awesome - again I know cause I have one standing right next to me. I especially like the leather effect and the depth of the lens and the reflexions - how did you achieve those reflexions? Are they mere reflexions of a background image?

Yes, the reflections are produced with an environment map, in this case a spherical HDRI
