We climb back into the car, both still floating somewhere between awkward laughter and “what the hell did we just do?” Sam starts the engine, and I lean back in my seat, finally feeling my body start to relax—even if my brain is still playing catch-up.
“Gotta… uh, get gas,” Sam mumbles as she pulls back onto the road. “Otherwise we’ll end up stranded on the highway, and you can explain to someone why we’re even out here.”
I grin. “Honestly? After what just happened, I can’t even explain it to myself.”
Sam snorts and just shakes her head, grinning as she pulls up to the pump and hops out. With one smooth motion and a loud clunk, the nozzle’s in the tank. I glance over and see her standing there, hands in her pockets, staring at the pump. Then—after a few seconds—she slowly turns her head to look at me through the window… and starts giggling softly. Just a little head shake and that grin that says: What the actual hell just happened to us?
And me? I can’t help but laugh too. I shake
