Dawn Cormorants Mural Concept by Damalia Dawn Cormorants Mural Concept by Damalia
This semester I was also involved with a special class sponsored by the people who are remodeling and expanding the Lincoln Park casino in Rhode Island. The purpose was (as a class) to design and execute a large mural for the entryway of the casino. We spent most of the semester doing small study type work to show the design team.

This one was my absolute favorite of the concepts I did this semester, and was also the last of the concepts I showed the design team. Cormorants on driftwood/dead tree at dawn. Unfortunately, they thought it was too spooky, and went with something more traditional (read kitchy and lame). I'm hoping to do this as a really large painting sometime soon anyway, because I just like it that much.

I think this is absolutely beautiful. I love the sea, and its smell and gulls and cormorants and everything else related to it. It makes me feel sentimental :D If I had lots of money I'd pay you to paint this on my wall.

Strong sense of atmosphere and mood, mostly because of the colors. I can also really feel the depth here. Great pic!

This is so beautiful, I love the blue highlights on the tree! I love how you put a lot of detail in it and yet it has a somewhat misty atmosphere, due to the blue tones shrouding it. Really makes you feel like you're sitting on the edge of a different world. It looks deserted and a bit sad but enchanting too. Dunno why they didn't choose it, but it's too beautiful for a casino, really. :)

It's not creepy, it's beatiful! Looking at something many find dreary and drab and celebrating it! And quite emotoional...

Aww! How could they reject this?

I've never been to that particular end of the world, but we get cormorants over here... And dammit, looking at this picture, I can almost SMELL the estuary ... Makes me kinda homesick actually. Great work - the lighting and colour selection is spot-on.

I like how you managed to create the mood of this piece using a very limited color palette. Nice work !

Wow! I actually like this tree alot too! It looks as if it's moving ! Very emotive really.

They found it spooky? I actually thought it portrayed more of sadness than ..creepy. Those Ravens (they are right?) is an awesome add. It gave it a more... serene.. death-aura. =3

Too bad it didn't make it.

Though maybe the reason it didn't get in is it's destiny is to be showcased on a single frame. =3 :D Who knows?
