This is a very touching image - there are many such collections of tombstones in the sites of old Jewish cemeteries in Poland as well - some of them are as old as 13th C. If you every visit Warsaw - please visit the Polin museum of the history of Polish Jews - it is very modern and interesting.

I've looked at your photos of Jewish cemeteries across Europe and found them to be both beautiful and haunting (no pun intended.) But I thought that the Nazis had torn up thousands of Jewish gravestones to use as paving stones? Did that not happen in the Czech Republic?

I must confess that when I visited Germany, I only sought out Worms and the area around it. (I was trying to look up the history of my family.) When I tried visiting the cemeteries I was told that because they were defiled and built over by the Nazis there were no more in Germany (and other places). Was this true?

I had no occasion to visit any cemeteries in Germany so I don't know about that. The one in Prague is one of the most ancient in Europe and it wasn't destroyed. The city itself withstood the war pretty well and was damaged only two days before the Germans surrendered. I think destroying cemeteries was not the immediate priority in Eastern Europe, as they had their hands full with killing living Jews in the big communities rather than damaging objects.
