Aiden and dad

It wasn't as if Aiden did not know how people talked about them in the lab. He was aware of it, even at his young age. They talked in Emion, because they thought that as a Darkaian he couldn't understand the language, but nothing could be further from the truth. Aiden was raised bilingual.
"He locked that poor child in his office," they whispered. "For twelve hours, without anything to eat or drink. Just because he folded paper planes from his documents."
"What do you expect a child that age to do?" The woman with dark gave him a pitiful side look when she thought he wasn't looking. She had two children of her own, about Aiden's age, but they went to school as normal kids did.
"He can't even call him his father."
"Really?"
"No, the last time he did he got scolded."
It was true. The bond that Aiden had with his parents was different from that of most children, even though he wouldn't really learn that until much later, when he first got out of the lab and met other people his age. Andrei was an old-fashioned man. Cold and authoritarian, as most people were back then. He took formalities to the absurd. Anyone who even dared to address him without his proper titles could expect a firm scolding. Aiden was no exception to that rule. The first time he called him did in the lab, his father had grabbed him by the arm and gave him an icy stare.
"It's Doctor Korovin for you." His suppressed anger clearly in his voice.
"But dad..."
"Here in Ground Zero, I'm not your father."
"But --"
"No buts. Here in the lab you are Aiden and I am Dr. Korovin. You are your own person, and you have to make your own name. It is unethical to lean on family ties in science."
Aiden thought it was awful, the idea that he was all alone in that unfamiliar environment, but he knew his father. The man was angry and Aiden didn't want a fight so he left it at that. As always, it was easier to just do what he was told.
