Now that I've completed both of my last two big illustration assignments, I've decided I'm going to spend the next few months doing cover recreations only...and then pick up some more book illustration assignments in late Fall.

If you are interested in a classic cover recreation (silver/bronze age - not really a fan of doing recreations where there's a lot of computer color & typesetting), here is what I'm asking:

11x17" cover recreation ($100 each) -  all logos, trade dress/etc hand-drawn on Strathmore 300 series bristol boards (minus the UPC box, unless you really want a Spidey head or something in that space - otherwise, I extrapolate the existing art to take up that space).  No pasteups.

18x24" jumbo size classic EC cover recreation ($150 each) - same as the above, but for one of my extra large size EC (like Tales from the Crypt, Weird Science, all those classic titles) recreations.

If you have any questions about the recreations, please send me a message, including potential covers you'd like re-created.   My gallery is full of previous recreations, for reference.

Note: I am *not* interested in commissions for re-imaginings or custom cover designs at this time.

All art/logos/trade dress are inked on an 11x17 board, no pasteups, in order to simulate a full-sized piece of original art.  My method is to lightbox all logos and trade dress with Pitt pens with the exception of the UPC box - I leave that out and continue the artwork "underneath" it where applicable.  Then, I lightbox the artwork contours in pencil in order to ensure placement.  Lastly, I ink the artwork freehand with a Raphael Kolinsky 8084 brush and dark india ink, typically while holding a copy of the actual comic in my other hand for reference. I strive to reproduce the original ink lines as closely as I can with my brush.

Price includes free USPS first class shipping to the USA - the art board will be slipped into an 11x17 polybag and rolled inside a sturdy 4" diameter mailing tube.  Sorry, no international shipping is available.

Between 10-15 years ago, I used to draw comic page commissions where I would offer to illustrate a page of script by the commissioner.  The idea was that this would set me apart from all of the artists doing mostly pinup work, and it also sounded like a fun project.  It *was* pretty fun for a while, although the kind of jobs that would come my way quickly transitioned (so to speak) into mostly fetish or transformation pieces.

I was OK with this for a while, and did them for a couple of years.  I felt an ego boost from having folks enjoy my work and be willing to pay for it, but eventually wasn't real happy with the subject matter and ceased doing fetish-style work about ten years ago.

At the same time, I would post the work here on DA, and they would get a *ton* of views and faves.. which is also gratitifying.  As years went by, I found that I wasn't super proud of a lot of the work I had posted due to the subject matter, and I'd also improved as an artist/inker to the point of disliking my earlier work because it wasn't as well done.

I removed a goodly chunk of the more risque pieces from my gallery, but left a few milder ones... which still get a few favorites a month, many years later.  These faves still feed my ego, but the work is so far removed from the quality of work I do now, that even the more innocuous ones make me cringe when I see them.

Also, those faves mean people are seeing that work, enjoying it, and might even enjoy my more recent work, which is pretty mild in comparison.

Anyway, I think I've convinced myself while writing this into doing another purge of the rest of that stuff from my gallery... it's just not 'me' anymore.   Even though a few of them have tens of thousands of views. :D

Hi guys, I've been thinking about getting some basic Copic or Blick markers to do some flat color on the black and white ink sketch cards I've been doing..

For those of you who use markers on your ink work, is it better to color *after* the inking is done, or color over the pencils and *then* ink?

I'm hoping that they work well over existing ink, as that'd be easiest for me at my novice coloring level... but I'd love to hear techniques or suggestions, thanks!

- How long have you been on DeviantArt?
Nearly 10 years.  Seems like longer!  :D

- What does your username mean?
Dalgoda was one of my favorite indy comics from the 80s, and I used to draw little cartoon heads of the character on napkins when I'd go to a restaurant.  At some point I tried using it as a username on a website years ago, and was told it was not available, hence 'Dalgoda7'.

- Describe yourself in three words.
Cartoonist. Daydreamer. Obsessed.

- Are you left or right handed?
Left for mousing, right everything else.

- What was your first deviation?
A scratchboard of a theme I'd done years prior, combining Captain America with the Red Skull.
Skullcap by dalgoda7

- What is your favourite type of art to create?
Fully inked & lettered comic pages, although I have to admit I really love doing cover recreation inking exercises even though they're not 'my' art.

- If you could instantly master a different art style, what would it be?
Digital coloring.

What was your first favourite?
This 'beauty', I can barely remember that far back!
Beauty by hnedoocko

- What type of art do you tend to favourite the most?
I tend to favorite other black and white comic art the most, it's my favorite.

- Who is your all-time favourite deviant artist?
Huh, I can't pick just one, but over the years I think I've become pretty decent pals with cluedog  , LarryKingUndead  , besnglist  , and curtsibling , exchanging art or collaborating on projects, etc.  There are a dozen or so more folks on here where I like everything they do.

- If you could meet anyone on DeviantArt in person, who would it be?
At least the four nice folks above, along with a few more.

- How has a fellow deviant impacted your life?
LarryKingUndead and I have collaborated on what I would call some of my finest work to date.  At some point we'll be printing that work as a book.  I think that's a pretty decent impact!  When I win the lottery, he's first on my list to bring into the comic book creator compound that I'll build in Portland.

- What are your preferred tools to create art?
Raphael 8404 brush, Koh-i-noor drawing ink, Strathmore 300 bristol paper.  Photoshop, for constructing layouts.

- What is the most inspirational place for you to create art?
Just at my boring 'ol drafting table/studio.

What is your favourite DeviantArt memory?
Getting a Daily Deviation for  Multiverse II by dalgoda7was pretty darn awesome.

Colors make everything better!

Wed Jun 5, 2013, 7:26 AM
It's just too bad I can't color for dog doody!

Here's a really fun collaboration by :iconkaufee: and myself, where I drew & inked his Kaufee Universe characters, Mr. Superior and Tit-Mouse.

Superior Trouble by Kaufee

Mark took my lineart and did his typically spectacular job coloring it!   Normally I don't draw my stuff "for color" (with all my silly cross-hatching), but this turned out pretty rad.

I'm horrible - I won't tag people

Sun May 19, 2013, 11:10 PM
..but I love answering these things.   I'll put some new questions at the bottom of this set, feel free to answer them if they appeal to you.

Here goes:

1.  What's the strangest dream you've ever had that you are comfortable telling?

All of my dreams are pretty freaking strange.   They do tend to bunch themselves into a few main categories, though:

A. Work - I used to have dreams about being trapped in my first job from age 16, for the next twenty years.  Those went away, now they're mostly dreams about sea changes at my current job (which I've held for 14+ years).  It's never located in the actual real-life building, it's always some new office I've made up in my head.

B. School - When I was younger, the setting would be whichever school I was attending at that point.  Since I've been out of school/college for almost twenty years, now the school dreams are all about some variation on San Jose State University - typically, somehow I always have to go back to pick up credits, but I never end up going/finishing class in the dreams.  Lots of dreams about being in dorms again, too.   But no one is doing school stuff, everyone is partying.  Hey, that's not too dissimilar to what it was like in real life!  ;)

C. Large elaborate malls or touristy shopping areas/hotels/casinos - these have ranged from the cosmopolitan (think San Francisco or Seattle) to the podunk (like the very small town I grew up in), but the common thread is a huge group of shopping/eateries... but in my dream, I never spend too much time in any one place, and never get to eat or buy anything, even if I have some sort of mission.

D. Wilderness areas that require some sort of elaborate journey to reach, and then having to find my way back.  Many of these are based on the forested areas I grew up in.

E. Travel via very sketchy vehicles, like huge aircraft that *always* have some sort of trouble, but never actually crash - we all walk away.  Same goes for trains, light rail systems (sometimes these mix with the elaborate journeys), etc.

2.  Who's the most beautiful person you've ever seen?

I'm going to have to cop out a bit on this one, because no matter how beautiful I may think someone is, they are never the end-all, be-all.  There's always someone who will draw my gaze for some aspect that the previous might lack, or just might hit a visual 'spot' for me.  I don't think there's any one person I've seen who stands head and shoulders over everyone else.

3.  What's the first movie you've ever seen in a theater?

I'm not completely sure about this, but I think it might be the original Star Wars, back in '77.  I was five years old, and it completely changed my expectations for entertainment.  It's the first movie I can distinctly remember being in a movie theater to see.  I may have been to another movie previously, but I have no memories of them.

4.  If you could live in any time, what would it be?

Cheez, I'm completely spoiled by the amount of information available on the Internet, as well as the ease of communication, so it would be hard for me to give that up to be in the past - but whenever I think of past times that I would have liked to have lived (as an adult), I think of the 1970s.

5.  Who do you think the most overrated musician alive today is?

I don't know a ton about 'modern' music (I generally only listen to oldies or classic rock or classic new wave stations), but I'm gonna go out on a limb and say Justin Bieber.

6.  What's your favorite drink?

When I drank liquor, I liked Captain Morgan & Coke a lot.  Now, I really like craft beer that's infused with spruce tips - it sounds weird, but it is amazing.

7.  What's your favorite kind of weather?

Cool & sunny (like, 60 degrees).  Rain is also nice, if I don't have to be outside or do yard work.

8.  If you could put one kind of curse or hex on any person, what would it be?

So many choices... let's go with Ann Coulter.  I curse her to be reincarnated as a member of one of the demographics she tends to belittle, but with all of her previous memories intact.

9.   Is Pluto a planet or a moon?

It'll always be a planet to me.

10.  If you could be in any movie, what would it be?

Star Trek: The Motion Picture.  That future seemed pretty dang nice to me, and I'd be willing to wear the same pajamas they all wore.

15 slot feature meme

Thu Jul 21, 2011, 12:47 PM
Taken from :iconmarker-mistress:'s journal, I don't know why I don't do features like this more often.

Be one of the first 15 people commenting on this journal entry, and I will put your avatar and three deviations that I will personally select from your gallery in this "Share the Art" feature.

IMPORTANT: If you do comment, you're expected to do the same in your own journal; putting me on the first place, completing the list with 15 other people.
I WILL BE WATCHING AND WAITING IN THE SHADOWS TO MAKE SURE OF THIS. If you do not set up a feature in your journal within a day of responding, I will take you off the list and replace you with another in line.

The idea behind this is NOT to get a free feature, but to help spread art and artists around for everyone. So why not check out the artists on other peoples' list?

Lifetime art goals

Sun Nov 8, 2009, 3:46 PM
There was a point a few years ago in my comic drawing 'career' that I gave myself a goal of drawing a thousand pages of comics before dying.  At that point I had resuscitated my drawing habit to the point where that seemed quasi-realistic if not likely.

A few years after that I counted up what I had done (I'm counting false starts, unpublished/unsold & really old stuff, as long as it's a complete drawn sequential page) and came up with something in the mid-140s... and felt pretty good about it.  A thousand didn't seem like that big of a number anymore.

Today I counted up again and came up with 255.  That's just over 25 percent!
This 1000 thing may happen someday!   I can do about a page a week, so I could conservatively see this happen within twenty years. ;)

New arts happening

Sun Oct 25, 2009, 3:52 PM
Wow, haven't posted a new journal since that long arse quiz back in May or something.  Time to clear that off my front page!

Anyhow, I'm back to doing more art after a summer of having our house built/moving/working and doing other summer type stuff that has kept me away from the drawing board.  But I'm excited to start doing more work again.

I've revisited The Season for a couple of pages (2nd page is being inked currently) as well as an art jam with ~Selnartheblack before I start working on a possible webcomic project...  I'm not sure if the writer would want me to post the episodes here or not, but if not I'll post the addy in a journal, maybe with some sketches.  For those zombie fans out there, keep watching this space...

Ok, I'm all moved and semi-settled, I think it's time to bust out the ink and do some more art.

I might start out with some more sketch cards to warm up, then maybe some more superhero covers or whatnot. I'll also be taking commissions again as well!

I've been tagged by :iconcluedog:

1. You must tag at least 6 people.(let them know they've been tagged) Bah
2. No tag backs.
3. Tell the truth.

1. What is your deviantArt name and what does it mean?

2. Why did you join this site?

Time to get workin' again

Thu Jan 15, 2009, 1:10 PM
Ok, I'm all moved and semi-settled, I think it's time to bust out the ink and do some more art.

I might start out with some more sketch cards to warm up, then maybe some more superhero covers or whatnot. I'll also be taking commissions again as well!

So!  Doing another couple of personalized fake comic cover pieces for family members really got me in the mood to do more covers.

I thought about doing classic cover recreations (for commissions, even), but I wasn't totally comfortable with redoing someone else's artwork verbatim.  So I came up with the idea of taking some of my favorite Marvel and DC covers and swapping characters from the other company.

This made the recreation gig(?) WAY more fun, as each cover was almost a new piece of art after I finished.  I steal the poses and some of the context, but do the rest of the rendering as 'my' style.

I have to admit also that although the logos and other trade dress are painstaking (inking go-go checks with a brush, anyone?  Didn't think so!), I find that I have a sick fascination with all of that stuff!  On some I've swapped logos outright (the Avengers and JLA mashups), while I've adapted logos on others (Champions logo using the 60's Teen Titans look, Lois Lane/Mary Jane, etc).  Whatever fits my mood at the moment.

I sold the first couple (JLA/Avengers) on ebay and got some good response, so I'll probably post these there for sale as I finish them.  I'm still coming up with new ideas for mashups for classic covers (or just covers I really like), so I may be stuck on this concept for a couple months.

I've been finishing an average of one piece per week (my usual goal is one finished b&w piece of some sort per week, so I'm keeping up), so I'd think I'll have 4-8 more of these suckers by the time I get bored with it.

Random mashup ideas of covers to 'cover':

Avengers #201
West Coast Avengers (mini) #1

After seeing (and buying!) all the great sketch cards by some of my DA friends, I decided to give it a whack.

At first I thought I'd do superhero cards and maybe sell them, but I got this nutty idea while I was on the treadmill (the genesis device of most of my nutty ideas) to pick a bunch of my favorite B and C level character actors, instead.  There were tons of goofy/unique looking actors to choose from.

Four weeks or so later, I've done four sets of nine cards, with more to come.  I've taken a short break from the character actor potpurri to do a few James Bond related sheets - just got in that kind of a mood after watching a couple of early Connery films.

Thanks to everyone who's viewed/faved these cards, as I still feel that I'm in a very experimental stage with this kind of work.

*Edit* Originally I was thinking of cutting these up into 2.5 x 3.5" cards, as I have the sheets measured & lined on the back for that purpose.  But I'm just digging how they look as whole, uncut sheets of nine.. I don't know if I could bring myself to cut 'em up!
