I stopped at Lago d'Averno and photographed this Violet Darter in the heat of the day. I know the habits and quirks of this species, so it's not too difficult to get right on top of them (especially when they are actively hunting).

Tech Specs: Canon 80D (F11, 1/250, ISO 100) + a Canon MP-E 65mm macro lens (set to 2x) + a diffused MT-26EX-RT (E-TTL metering, -2/3 FEC). This is a single, uncropped, frame taken hand held. I post I used Denoise AI, and Clarity in that order.

It is impressive that you were able to sneak up on these fast darting creatures and you get such good shots out in the environment.

This is a male, and down at the lake they like to hunt while perched on a wooden fence. When hunting they are really territorial, and when I get close and they fly off it's sometimes due to them seeing a critter to eat or they just want to chase off another male. Once they realize that I'm not a threat I can get really close, but they take off more often than they let me take a photo.
