Mantis Portrait

My wife found this Mantis in our Lavender in the evening, but I waited until early the next day to shoot it hoping that the cooler temps would slow it down. No such luck though. It was active and difficult to photograph. Image taken in Lago Patria, Italy in September of 2021.

Tech Specs: Canon 80D (F14, 1/250, ISO 100) + a Canon MP-E 65mm macro lens (set to over 2x) + a diffused MT-26EX-RT with a Kaiser adjustable flash shoe on the "A" head (the key), E-TTL metering, -1 FEC). This is a single, uncropped, frame taken hand held. In post I used Topaz Sharpen AI and Clarity in that order.

Now seriously, beautiful macro capture, pal. Focus and sharpness are amazing! Its chitinous plates look like green metal made, and the compound eyes like some kinda high-tech lenses. Impressive!

From whence arrived the praying mantis?

From outer space, or lost Atlantis?

I glimpse the grim, green metal mug

That masks the pseudo-saintly bug,

Orthopterous, also carnivorous,

And faintly whisper, Lord deliver us.

If they were the size of a small dog we would be doing a lot of praying...

Thanks for introducing me to that poem!
