Honeybee Feeding on a Blackberry Flower II by dalantech Honeybee Feeding on a Blackberry Flower II by dalantech
I baited this honeybee with a little of her own honey. Tech Specs: Canon 1D Mark III (F16, 1/250, ISO 100) + a Canon EF-S 60mm macro lens + a 12mm extension tube. (~1.4x) + a diffused MT-24EX. This is a single, uncropped, frame taken hand held. I am holding on to the flower stem with my left hand, and I'm resting the lens on that same hand to keep the scene steady. The "blue sky" is a piece of light blue plexiglass with a piece of glossy photo paper behind it (glossy side toward the camera).

Blog post with a video of that background.

Good News About The Bees, They Seem To Be Making A Slow, But Sure Comeback! I've Seen A Lot Of Bumble Bees And A Few Honey Bees This Year, As Well As Other Insects!

True, I saw about eight different species of solitary bees in my Sunflowers this year (plus honeybees).

Awesome shot man, perfect lighting and colours :)

But I must ask, why use an extension tube on this lens at only 1.4x? Does this increase the field of view while allowing you to get that bit closer as well?

Actually it should decrease the field of view, but the reason for using the tube is because the lens was designed for 1.6x crop factor cameras and I'm using it on a 1.3x camera. If I didn't use the tube I'd destroy the mirror in my 1D MK III ;)

Really? I always thought the MP-E was for full frame. as its not an EF-S type lens. Perhaps I'm wrong though :D

I used the EF-S 60mm on that shot. The MP-E 65mm is a full frame lens.

So cool! There is a feeling of unrealistic here, as if you are stepping into a different world. It really makes me want to learn more about bees!
