El Toro by dalantech El Toro by dalantech
The first thing that popped into my head when I saw this Long Horned Beetle was that it looked like an Ox.

Tech Specs: Canon 70D (F16, 1/250, ISO 100) + a Canon MP-E 65mm macro lens (almost 3x) + a diffused MT-24EX (both flash heads on Kaiser adjustable flash shoes). This is a single, uncropped, frame taken hand held.

Technique: This one is really simple -it was just early in the morning and the beetle was lethargic, temperature around 16C.

El Torro by dalantech is a remarkable blend of Macro skills and the eye of a passionate artist. With only a very minimal DOF it is a real challenge to render a portrait like this. ( Suggested by snomanda and Featured by MarcosRodriguez )

Oh my, this one is stunning work. Not talking only about your great execution, technique and so, but also about finding such amazing creature. I've never thought beetle can look like this!
It appears beautiful, but also little bit scary at the same time - just like whole nature does!
You have great pieces of art. Keep it up.

Hell that one is dressed complete in furr, unbelievable shot. There is no AF for this lens, is it?

Nope. So manual that the focus indicators in the view finder don't even work. But to be honest I wouldn't use AF above 1x anyway.

And you just have to stop down to f/16 and use a flash, to have a larger area crisp, I think.
Still I cannot imagine how to focus at, only judging through finder. I bet you developed some special technique, which takes at least some shots to choose a really crisp one? Great equipment, technique!

:tip-hat:
I myself had some nice results with this 85mm, reverse 50mm coupled, but only with a tripod at home digital-photography-school.com…
fav.me/d80cqiy something like a lucky shot for me. Have to admit it seems like this macro shootings are bit of work :O

I know that the area of acceptable focus is parallel to the sensor and razor thin, and in my head I can picture where it is going to fall in the scene. So I look for angles that are going to make the most of what little depth I have, trying to lay that "surface" over the curve of an insect's face. I also look for textures in the area that I want to be in focus. Last I pay attention to where the area of acceptable focus is but use my peripheral vision for framing, so I can frame and focus quickly. So yes, a lot of technique developed over nine years of shooting macro. When people tell me that they want my lens I tell them that they really want my experience with the glass ;)

What a sweet beetle.
I love the head. It associates me with a cow or deer to pet on.
