September Winner and Unlimited October
Every month, a different folder will be selected to allow unlimited submissions with auto approval.  The winning submission for September Bees and Wasps is "Gymnast V" by dalantech.  A Llama will be coming your way carrying 300 points and a permanent spot in our favorites gallery.  Congrats to dalantech and thank you to all who entered; there were many fantastic entries.
For October, we have opened up two folders for unlimited submissions.  Butterflies and Moths are the folders selected for unlimited submissions and auto approval.  Add as many Butterfies and Moths as you want for the entire month of October!
At the end of October a new folder will be selected for unlimited submissions and auto approval. Please attempt to keep the quality high, because at the end of the month, the folder will be "cleaned up" and only the best deviations will remain.  On the other side of the coin: the best submission of the month for that folder will receive 300 points, a l

Best of August 2013
Here are some of the best pictures I found in August, 2013. They do not appear in my Square-features, that's why I do a monthly feature for all those great artists on deviantART who submitted no-square pictures.
 Enjoy!

August Feature
And so another month comes to a close. Spring is literally just around the corner. They say things can only get better - which I am hoping is true. The key to life is to believe in oneself. The art is learning how to.
Found so many wonderful photographs this time, it was hard to choose just 5 of each! These photographers are certainly talented, and deserve the attention!

Sleeping Solitary Bee II
Here's a higher magnification view of how this solitary bee uses it's proboscis to anchor itself while it sleeps.

Tech Specs: Canon 80D (F11, 1/250, ISO 200 due to Highlight Tone Priority) + a Canon MP-E 65mm macro lens (around 3x) + a diffused MT-26EX-RT ("A" flash head on a Kaiser adjustable flash shoe), E-TTL metering, -1/3 FEC, second curtain sync). This is a single, uncropped, frame taken hand held.

Sleeping Solitary Bee I
Not the first time I've seen this species of solitary bee sleeping with it's proboscis anchored into a flower's stamen.

Tech Specs: Canon 80D (F11, 1/250, ISO 200 due to Highlight Tone Priority) + a Canon MP-E 65mm macro lens (around 2x) + a diffused MT-26EX-RT ("A" flash head on a Kaiser adjustable flash shoe), E-TTL metering, -1/3 FEC, second curtain sync). This is a single, uncropped, frame taken hand held.

Mason Maintenance
The bad weather is really making it tough for the local pollinators. I was shooting this waterlogged Mason Bee when he started cleaning the water off of his fur.

Tech Specs: Canon 80D (F11, 1/250, ISO 200 due to Highlight Tone Priority) + a Canon MP-E 65mm macro lens (3x) + a diffused MT-26EX-RT ("A" flash head on a Kaiser adjustable flash shoe), E-TTL metering, -1/3 FEC, second curtain sync). This is a single, uncropped, frame taken hand held.

Red Mason Bee IV
This newly hatched Red Mason Bee (male) is one of mine. The cocoons I harvested last year are starting to hatch. Due to the cool temps (13C) and overcast skies this little one was having a tough time getting his metabolism up. He would move around and then freeze, and I'd look for a photo.

Tech Specs: Canon 80D (F11, 1/125, ISO 200 due to Highlight Tone Priority) + a Canon MP-E 65mm macro lens (about 2x) + a diffused MT-26EX-RT ("A" flash head on a Kaiser adjustable flash shoe), E-TTL metering, 0 FEC, second curtain sync). This is a single, uncropped, frame taken hand held.

Red Mason Bee III
About a dozen Mason Bees hatched today, and I carried them to some flowers so they could get some energy. Due to the cool (14C) partly cloudy weather they had a hard time getting their metabolism going. This little guy would forage for a while then turn around to look outside the flower. His metabolism would tank and every time he stopped moving I'd look for a photo.

Tech Specs: Canon 80D (F11, 1/250, ISO 200 due to Highlight Tone Priority) + a Canon MP-E 65mm macro lens (about 2.5x) + a diffused MT-26EX-RT (both flash heads on the Canon flash mount to keep the flower from blocking the "A" flash head), E-TTL metering, (+1/3 FEC, second curtain sync). This is a single, uncropped, frame taken hand held.
