Rarity by Dahtamnay Rarity by Dahtamnay
I was really pleased with how my Rainbow Dash turned out, and channelled some inspiration into another MLP piece. Getting all the lines on Rarity neatly arranged was a lot of work, but definitely worth it. Defining her contours with only the hair and shadows works surprisingly well.
I'll probably do more characters if I get any good ideas.

Created with Inkscape.

Can you make a tutorial for this?

Not likely to happen I'm afraid, for several reasons. This is a very specific style I only used once, and may not have much general use. Don't think I used any fancy techniques either. In fact, It's been quite some time since this was made. I'd probably do some things differently now.

Oh, darn. I really needed to expand my style a little, you see, I can only use very minimalistic styles now. (very useful for logos, but not really for that much else.)

Well, personlly I prefer learning techniques from doing my own research. Look at what other artists do and try to emulate it. Experiment a lot yourself. When it comes to tutorials, I'd only look at very general ones outlining basic techniques or features of a vector program. Once you know how the tools work, you're free to figure out the best way to use them yourself.

I know how the tools work very well, but I can't really do this kinda stuff.

I wouldn't say that's there's much to this technically speaking. It's basically just drawing a lot of parallel strokes, and overlap them with white shapes to define the contours of the character. There's some fiddling involved with the stroke widths. I converted the strokes to path outlines for more precise control over them. But other than that it's just a lot of nit-picky precision work to get the curves to flow nicely.

What may have been more tricky is coming up with the style idea for this. And it's hard to help you with that, as it is a very spontaneous creative process.

Well, I can't really see how you did the mane.

Hmm, well I don't know what else to tell you that would help, but I could send the source Inkscape SVG file for you to look at. If you think that would help you, I'll send you a note with a download link.

Definitely an interesting technique used! I'd love to see something like this stitched, it seems perfect for that.

This is simply wonderful! I love how you defined her shape and cutie mark, it cannot be mistaken for anyone else but Rarity! Although her torso looks a bit lumpy, I believe it's due to the mane by her snout not going all the way down to her back and thus creating a weird bulge? Otherwise, it's just fabulous
