How to Write a Convincing Character History
Okay, this and its follow-up (How to Worldbuild for WT) are taking me a lot longer to write. First, it's a lot harder to generalize about character history/world development. For the most part, I can't give you nifty advice about character histories the way I can say "positive and negative traits are not an actual thing" for personalities. There's a lot of equally good ways to go about both character history and worldbuilding!
The other problem is that character histories (and worldbuilding, but histories especially) are where you start to see a lot of my personal biases crop up in bigger ways. Writing this was super hard because I was constantly checking myself, asking, "Am I saying this because it's true and helpful, or am I saying this because it's what I like to see?"
So in the interest of transparency, I'm gonna explain how this particular guide is going to proceed:
While all my guides teach by example, this guide is going to teach really heavily by example. Allow me t

A World Train Application Guide PSA
So, I think some things need addressing about my "How to Balance" guides and about their relationship to the WorldTrain application process in general. Let's jump right in, yeah?
Protip #1: There's No One Way to Make a Good App
I'm eventually gonna address this with a "How to Balance Your Character: Whole App Balance" guide, but I think it bears repeating now: these guides specifically represent my way of developing characters. My guides represent one mode of character creation: mine. And they're not complete yet!
One thing the guides haven't addressed yet is how sections relate to each other -- how, for example, having a substantially larger personality section can enable you to be shorter in other sections. They also have yet to address things like alternate design strategies -- for example, developing your character's skills/weaknesses section like a list of RPG character abilities is a perfectly valid way of dealing with the section that a

How to Balance a Character: Skills and Weaknesses
All right, I don't really have much in the way of introduction for this, so let's skip the intro and jump straight in. I have some serious sassmastering to get to.
Protip #1: Skills and Weaknesses Should Tell Me About Your Character's Personality
For future reference: every section on the app should tell me about your character's personality. Every. Single. One. But this is especially true of the skills section. Even on the individual skills level -- it is basically never enough to tell me, "Slicey McStabbington is good with a sword and will be evenly matched with most sword-wielding opponents," because I will sit here like, "Okay. Cool. Your sword-wielder can swing a sword. Great."

Imagine if instead we had: "Slicey McStabbington was trained in a variety of swordfighting styles when he entered the military, but his preferred weapon is the slower but stronger Zweihander, which he uses to overpower his opponents in clos

How to Balance a Character: Powers
Or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bullshit
It turns out that power, and specifically combat power, really needed a section all its own, so skills and weaknesses will come later.
*a-hem* Anyway: If you're wondering about that subtitle/Dr. Strangelove reference, I say "bullshit" because in a fantasy setting like World Train powers are, indeed, bullshit. Quite frankly, pretty much every character in this roleplaying group is seriously OP under the right circumstances. We're like a small cast of demigods here.
"But Dae," you cry, "we can't be OP! It's in the rules! And I mean, I don't even want to be OP; that's totally not fun for everyone involved! And [insert admin here] told me that my character is too powerful and stuff! So how do I make my character's powers not bullshit?!"
Well, first of all, don't shout so much. I know I put all those exclamation points in your speech, but seriously, that's not necessary. Second of all:

How to Balance a Character: Personality
That's right, everybody. Let's talk character development.
We get a lot of the same questions during World Train openings, and chief among them is, "How do I balance a character's positive and negative personality traits?" Seriously, it comes up a lot. So, I figured I'd lay down my answer to that question in the form of four Totally Sweet Protips™. Or really, address that in two Totally Sweet Protips™, and veer off onto some related character development tangents in the other two.
Obligatory disclaimer: This is my advice. This is how I develop character and whatnot, and only I can speak for it. This is not my fellow admins' advice, and following this advice is not a guarantee of anything with regards to getting into World Train. But for those of you who have these questions or concerns, this is my answer.
Protip #1: "Positive" and "Negative" Traits Aren't a Thing
They aren't. That's it. That's the big secret. That is my greatest

Sympathy
There's something relaxing about Saturday mornings in Smekoios's Grand Market. Despite the press of the crowd on all sides, bumps are seldom more than brushes, and voices never swell past a soothing murmur. The cave walls bounce all sound back into a blur of white noise: a senseless melody of people talking, laughing, being. The smell of fresh, sunshine-grown fruit permeates the market air. Ajax takes a deep breath, smiling at the sweet-tart scent of imported blackberries.
A local vendor brews one-dollar coffee at the edge of the hubbub, hoping to make a quick fortune off the crowd. Ajax slips him ten and takes two cups, elbows up to keep from being jostled. His first sip is rich and earthen, Turkish-style sludge lingering at the bottom. It'd pair perfectly with fresh fruit, which is the point, really. Here in the caves, the local cuisine is dense and bitter like the cold, dark earth it fought to come from. Leafy greens, hearty mushrooms, legumes and herbs and even a few mutant varieti

Generosity
Trying to find something for Velanna is infinitely more frustrating than he thought it'd be.
Typically, when Ajax wants to give someone something small, he fixes a watch or clock for them-- regardless of their objective value when completed, he usually finds the broken pieces for dirt cheap or free, and repair can take all of five minutes if everything's in decent shape. But though Vel had been fascinated by his watch that night, she'd also expressed annoyance, so he'd ruled it out. Anything else he could think to make seemed like too much, so since then he'd kept his eyes open at every stop, searching without trying to look too hard, knowing the best gifts are the ones you stumble upon.
Smekoios is a good place for that, anyway. He minnows through the crowd with ease, unfazed by the slight jostles and polite 'excuse me's. Even in the empire's densely packed open markets, the volume rarely rises above natural conversation, murmurs amplified by the cavern walls that bounce the voices ba

Groups

I'm sad to say that after three great years, I'm leaving WorldTrain. Unfortunately, balancing the demands of school, work, and the group has been more stress than I can handle. While I hadn't meant to leave so abruptly, rest assured that this is not as sudden as it seems, and that I am okay! My 'retirement' has actually been in the works for a while; I just moved it up a bit.

I want to thank my fellow Traingoers for those three years. I made some of the best friends I'll ever have in this group, and I will always cherish the memories I've made with you. My art and writing have grown so much as a direct result of my time here. Developing settings as an admin was an absolute joy, and I'll miss it.

There are some great events and new features coming up in the group for you all - I'd definitely be looking forward to some sweet plans for WT's 4th anniversary if I were you. My fellow admins have put a lot of love and work into the upcoming stuff, and I hope you all enjoy the hell out of it. I think it's gonna be great.

I really can't say what'll be next for me RP-wise, if anything. I think I need to take some time to get my life in order. But again: thank you all so much for those three years. You have given me so much with them, and I hope I was able to give you something, too, whether as an RPer, an admin, a writer of sassy tutorials, or just a plain old friend.

Stay frosty, everybody.
