Five Favorite Frankenstein Films
2018 marks the 200th anniversary of Mary Shelley’s classic, Frankenstein. Seen here are some of the many drawings I’ve done of the ol’ Monster from my top five favorite Frankenstein films:

"Son of Frankenstein" (1939)

A lot of snobby critics seem to think that only James Whale could make good Frankenstein movies for Universal, but I'd still make the argument that Rowland V. Lee's entry is far superior. It boasts a smart story, beautiful art direction, and amazing performances by Basil Rathbone, Lionel Atwill, and especially Bela Lugosi as Ygor. Although some folks may be upset that Boris Karloff isn't at the center of attention for this movie he still gets his best moment ever as the Monster when he discovers the death of a certain character...

"Abbott and Costello meet Frankenstein" (1948)

Possibly the best of the 'A&C meet the Monsters' films (heck, maybe even the best A&C film period), this horror-comedy was a strangely fitting end to the Universal Frankenstein series and remains a fan favorite to this day.

"Frankenstein Conquers the World" (1965)

While I do admit my favorite parts of this movie are the 'bonus' kaiju (Baragon and Oodako), they really are just the 'dessert'; the real meal of the story is the origin of the new Frankenstein monster, whose immortal heart is smuggled by Nazis during WWII into Japan just in time for the Hiroshima bombing. The result is a part-crazy, part-creepy movie that's a bit different in tone and style than Toho's Godzilla films but is still just as entertaining.

"Frankenstein and the Monster from Hell" (1974)

It's far from being the most critically acclaimed of the Hammer series, and yeah, Peter Cushing and David Prowse both look kinda' silly, but I still say this is a solid horror film and a fitting swan song to Cushing's long and beloved run as Dr. Frankenstein. The insane asylum setting is perfectly creepy and even if the monster costume is stiff and lifeless it still has a very cool design (and hey, I personally prefer monsters to be monstrous!).

"Young Frankenstein" (1974)

With all due respect to Bud and Lou, THIS is truly the greatest Frankenstein comedy of all, if not the greatest horror-comedy of all time. Gene Wilder and Mel Brooks really did their homework in recreating the genre classics while still bringing original (and hysterical) material to the mix; the result is the perfect parody and loving homage to the legend of Frankenstein.  Blücher!

Rocket Grunt's Lament
I just remembered that 2018 is the 20th anniversary of Pokemon in America (I had the Blue version, which I used to play on my old gray Game Boy with the little spinach screen), so I drew something for the occasion.

You have a rockin' black suit, a gang of thugs to back you up, and a team of rats, bats, snakes, dream-eating tapirs and living pollution at your command...and you still get clobbered by a wandering little kid.

Bride Of Godzilla
Toho kicked around a lot of strange ideas for Godzilla movies that were ultimately never used, but this one is probably the weirdest of them all. "Bride of Godzilla?" is a completely insane story concept from 1955 that would have involved the King of the Monsters in a subterranean lost world, filled with monsters, prehistoric animals, and even mermaids!

Godzilla and Anguirus would have appeared, along with a giant archaeopteryx and chameleon (possibly precursors for Rodan and Varan, respectively) as well as a mammoth and sea serpent.

The mermaids help out the heroes of the story; as a way of saying thanks the humans shoot one of their babies in the head.

The protagonist of the film is a scientist who made himself a robot daughter; his ultimate creation, however, is a huge robot woman designed as an amalgamation of said daughter and a woman who dumped him (kind of a sicko, huh?). The robo-gal clobbers all the monsters before Godzilla himself falls in love with her, carries her off to his underground lair, and cuddles up with her, not knowing that she's rigged to explode...

As completely crazy as this story sounds, I still think it's a blast. Would it have worked as a film? Who knows, but as a psychotic piece of storytelling that even the looniest fan-fiction couldn't top, it's hilariously entertaining.

Scapula - Monsters Party
A two-page art spread that appears in the print version of SCAPULA AND THE SINISTER MONSTER DOOM LEGION (scapulacomic.bigcartel.com), showing Scapula and his creature crew celebrating with some classic horrors. Can my fellow monster kids identify every creep in the crowd?
