Description

Expect me to just throw bad news at you with every new post now, because I don't foresee anything good happening in the near future lol.

So I quit my part time job because the 60 something Japanese restaurant owner was insulting and beating his apprentice on a daily basis. It was a 23 years old poor little fellow named Nagaya. Right now I'm talking as if he were dead, but I do believe the dude will not last long before he kills himself. Last sincere dialog I had with him, he told me he hadn't been sleeping at all and it's not surprise he may be in severe depression.
Everyday the boss and his older colleague dropped a huge load of work on that poor Nagaya. Basically he had the load of 4 men on his shoulders. He was told to do the cooking, wash the dishes, do the plating and serve the customer. All at once. Like, he was just doing everything in the shop.
And when he didn't manage, because he didn't have the time and because nobody could physically be in 4 places at the same time, the boss would rain insults never heard on him. With such a violence that the customers could hear his growls from the dining area. And after the yelling, he'd hit the dude with anything at hand. Like throw kitchen utensils at him, shove him on the side or whatever.
Meanwhile, his older colleague didn't say shit. Just to not rub the boss the wrong way, that other colleague was also bullying Nagaya. I've never once saw him help or defend that man.
Just thinking of Nagaya working with only a 1 hours break from 9:30 to 21:30, at such a speedy pace and under such pain... I literally had the image of a donkey pulling a heavy load up a mountain while being whipped. Add to this the fact that, because of this bullying, the plates weren't washed properly. Just eating out of their plates made me puke once, then I forever refused to eat in that restaurant.
Opinions around me qualified this behavior of "Showa-like" (baby-boomer kind of behavior).
It is well known that the Japanese working culture is toxic, and I do agree it is. It is 2026 and nothing feels like the future.
So you're going to ask me, "But D4y, why are you talking about this".

My opinion is that a 100% capitalist society is detrimental to individuals.
So now let me be clear about one thing I know, witch is "fundamental rights". Witch apparently in Japan don't exist, because everything is based on a "self-responsibility" principle. Implying that, if you didn't get paid by your boss, it's your fault for not asking your boss when you get paid. If you get beaten by your boss, then it's your fault because you didn't work hard enough. That type of mentality. I think the Internet blurred the lines so I just thought this was an occasion to think about it.

Dropping bellow some historical facts about France legislation on work. This legislation will probably change not so long from now, given the huge ongoing economic and social crisis:
In January 1998 France voted for a legal maximum weekly time of 35 hours. In 2002, France votes a law against moral harassment at work. In case of harassement, 30 000€ of fine or 2 years of prison.
In the French law, it is stipulated that beyond 35 hours, the employer needs the employees CONSENT to make him work. And those are called over-time, with a 25% extra allowance.
And this concerns EVERY JOB IN FRANCE. This is what we call "social protection", under the principle that "every individual is born equal and free", and this is the French constitution (like literally WRITTEN LAW).

Thanks for your read.

That looks like a good depiction of smoking.
Oh dear. I knew that the job market in Japan was based in strict hierarchy and that there are things that we would view critically but I was not prepared for the amount of toxicity you shared. So it is basically a victim blaming culture.:'( That is horrible. I was always wondering why bullying is such a strong theme in many manga. Now I know.
Wait what? Your maximum is 35 hours in France!? And here our conservative people claim that 35 hours is pure lifestyle luxury that we cannot afford and we should work more than 40 hours. If they would get their wish it would be at least 50 hours. And they are working hard in shredding all our other rights by claiming that we need to cut the budget to get rid off our national debts.
