White December: Reaching Obertauern

Helena and Been to Hell had followed the group of participants for quite some time climbing the hillsides when they finally reached the gate to the trail's second goal; Obertauern. Ahead of them was yet a few days travelling through deep snow and low temperatures. Benny did not seem to bother at all and happily plowed through the snow, playfully leaping every now and then. Helena had to keep herself alerted to remain in the saddle, but when they had passed yet another distance, the scenery opened up between the trees and Helena had to stop Ben and just take in the sight of the mountains, the wide horizon and the warming but blinding sun reflecting in the pure snow. The thin mountain air reminded her of home and even though she was miles and miles away from Nattvik, this felt just as much as home as Nattvik did. It was an odd yet satisfying feeling. She could have spent the rest of her living days up here without ever getting homesick if it wasn't for the staff at home which she now concidered family. ''This place, Ben, is so much like home except the mountains here are somehow steeper and seems a lot taller" she mumbled to her stallion. Ben snorted as if to say; ye-yeh, lets gooo! Helena closed her eyes and felt the sun's warmth against her cheecks for a second before the clouds covered it, reminding Helena of the upcoming snow fall. When she opened her eyes, the group had already gone a few hundred metres away, but Helena had no rush. The group members laughed and joked while they crossed the open area, but even if Helena loved listening to them, she enjoyed a little silence as well. The gentle wind through the mountains, the sound of hooves hitting snow, the saddle leather creak, it was music in Helenas ears and she could finally rest her mind. Even if her thighs had started aching many kilometres ago, she didn't bother. This trail was to die for anyway.
