Boy, Napoleon really went into hyperdrive regarding annexation here. Parts of Italy, the Balkans, the Nehterlands and the western German coast ...

And people only mostly remember the annexation of the western bank of the rhine.

I kever understood what Napoléon had in mind when making the illyrian provinces fully part of France.

I can only speculate here: maybe it was to take away ground, to make it more difficult for the Austrians to invade Italy ?

But why directly France and not another of his client states?

Like i wrote: just speculating and guessing here. Maybe the region was to instabile and/or he needed the direct control to indirectly control Austria. Or it was just a humiliation
