"Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma - which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of other’s opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.” - Steve Jobs

Thanks so much for the critique!

This was a great but old B&W photo that I wanted to work from, and you're right, the foreground was very blurry in the photo so all the focus is really on his face. There is always a compromise when you work with photos instead of from life, this is one of them.
So working within the limits of what we have available to us, as artists, yet trying to bring something more to the painting than the photo did. I loved his expression of joy as he was playing his guitar in concert. It must be a special feeling to perform what you love, something from your heart, and have the audience respond to you in overwhelming approval. It makes all the hard work and practice worthwhile...like us artists!

It's been a goal of mine to be able to work in oils, and translate color from B&W to color - not as easy as the other way around! So thank you for such a great critique, it helps keep me practicing and expanding my skills, for I still have much to learn in oils.

Thanks for taking the time to critique!
Because I draw in my charcoal whites on med gray (instead of erasing them out, like if you were using pencil/graphite) it's easy to layer up shades of black to white, which gives his beard and hair a dense feeling. Gandalf has more hair than anyone I've ever drawn before, and with different textures, so it was a real challenge! I won't say it was easy, but it wasn't as hard as I first thought it would be. :XD:
Gandalf
great thing about hair is that it grows quickly :D
of course he's always changing his makeup, too :XD:

I should think about color more, same with design, before I start. Most often I get going and then decide what's working and what's not - this not only wastes time but I sometimes run out of space on my board/canvas! (Another good thing about digital, canvas size is easily changed!)
Near the end, I start thinking about leading your eye through the picture, using color and brush strokes for emphasis in certain spots. If I was working smarter I'd have all this planned out in my head! But most often, I work intuitively and then examine my choices as I near completion, which is a tough time to make any big changes :XD:

Aww, thanks! I hope so, especially about getting better! I think we hit plateaus here and there, progress doesn't happen in a straight line.

I'd like to see that, too - the AD did promise to keep me informed, but the contracts I signed give them the rights to do - or not do- just about anything, and they don't have to tell me. I don't know, now that Andy has a new "look" with his haircut? hmmm.
