What do you think of it? I have bootlegs of some of those concerts that a friend sent me years ago. I do like Greg's voice 'acapella'...like Epitaph here: https://youtu.be/ssUWSiMlFBU?t=160 I really wish they'd unearth more like that. It's certainly relevant, these days.
This was a great but old B&W photo that I wanted to work from, and you're right, the foreground was very blurry in the photo so all the focus is really on his face. There is always a compromise when you work with photos instead of from life, this is one of them.
So working within the limits of what we have available to us, as artists, yet trying to bring something more to the painting than the photo did. I loved his expression of joy as he was playing his guitar in concert. It must be a special feeling to perform what you love, something from your heart, and have the audience respond to you in overwhelming approval. It makes all the hard work and practice worthwhile...like us artists!
It's been a goal of mine to be able to work in oils, and translate color from B&W to color - not as easy as the other way around! So thank you for such a great critique, it helps keep me practicing and expanding my skills, for I still have much to learn in oils.
Because I draw in my charcoal whites on med gray (instead of erasing them out, like if you were using pencil/graphite) it's easy to layer up shades of black to white, which gives his beard and hair a dense feeling. Gandalf has more hair than anyone I've ever drawn before, and with different textures, so it was a real challenge! I won't say it was easy, but it wasn't as hard as I first thought it would be.
