Over the last few days I've gotten a lot of notes from people to split 3D manipulations (Use of premade models such as those available in Daz, Poser evermotion etc) and 3D modelling into separate categories. I'd like to get a bit more feedback from everyone to make an overall picture of how people feel, and whether the vocal minority I've been hearing from represent everyone's views.

Please don't send me any more generic messages on the subject, I've seen and acknowledge them, but my inbox is getting a little flooded. Instead, I'd appreciate it if you guys would pitch in here with your views and ideas.

Now I have no opinion on this either way, I can think of both pros and cons for splitting the gallery like this. I can see how it's useful definitely, but I don't want people to feel segregated either.

Please vote on this poll about splitting the gallery, and post all suggestions/ideas/arguments on the comments section of this journal.

Please keep it constructive, and remember that things like this take time and everyone needs to be a bit patient. :)

Here is the note I recieved, just to give everyone an idea of what we're talking about:

I would like to present this idea about the 3D category. There are some sound reasons why the 3D category needs to be further split. It's like lumping photography and photomanipulation into the same category. It should simply not be done. It is unfair all the way around to continue to lump the 3D body together.
Many Poser, Vue, Carrara, and Bryce artists are using premade models and textures to create their images, just like photomanipulators use premade stock to make their images. Whereas 3D modelers create their own models and textures from scratch, and mostly use entirely different programs.

Someone once coined the phrase 3D manipulations. It's perfect. It's simple. It can be further subdivided, i.e.; Fantasy, Sci-fi, Landscapes, Seascapes, Pinups, Male, Female, Portraits, Dark, Gothic, etc., genres very similar to photomanipulation. Any 3D render/image made with premade models, stock, textures, or backgrounds, which the artists did not create from scratch, and 3D renders with matte painting or digital painting would fall under this new category. Anyone using models they made themselves from scratch would post under 3D modeling category. 3D modeling can have its own separate genres as applies.

Let's see 3D split into modeling and manipulation, further clarified by genres instead of seeing it all lumped together. 3D art has grown in the time it was introduced to DA, by leaps and bounds. It's time to accommodate that growth instead of ignoring it.

So.. looking back on the web this topic have been discussed for more than a year now. And it looks like the majority ask for a splitup between the to artforms. Are there any response from deviantart development team that there will be a change ?
