LittleBigBattle on the High Seas

How does one sink a ship made out of sponge? That is a question to which I do not have an answer. All I know is that it'd be fun to try. :)

The ships took the most amount of time to create since I had to deal with some 70+ layers on my slow, clunky old computer. But it was actually kinda fun and I'm pretty satisfied with the final result. Although, if I had more time, I probably would have done even more with this. Oh well.

By the way, this is only the second digital artwork that I've ever created and feedback is always appreciated.

The stock Images that I used from the LittleBigPlanet 2 assetspack are as follows:
  • Characters on the ships

  • Stickers on the flags

  • Sponge texture for the ships

  • Fabric texture for the clouds (tweaked) and for the ropes on the masts

Everything else, the texture for the background, the ship design, the sun, the water, the fish + textures for them, the bubbles, the clouds... I created them all from scratch. Nothing was copied or traced from any other sources.

I used Paint.NET + Mouse & Keyboard to make this artwork.

The song that I listened to the most as it was quite fitting for this artwork was CONFRONTATION by Junichi Nakatsuru - SOULCALIBUR III ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK ~LEGEND OF SOUNDS~

looks cute, playful and light. I love the concept, and it's also impressive thatyou did this with a mousee. I like the colors, they set a lovely mood and the sun is quite nice-looking.

Wow those ships are nicely detailed. I wonder if the cannonballs would bounce off the other ship? Very colorful.

critique ^^
:bulletred: It's a bit hard to tell that the cannon balls being fired are cannon balls? It took me several moments to realise it. Adding a bit of shine to them will probably help.
:bulletorange: The yellow pattern bg doesn't really fit in with the rest of the picture? It's really noticable and detracts from the foreground too. Also the sun is too yellow-orange, would be nice if it was brighter.
:bulletyellow: The water is nice, but I don't really fancy the bubble texture, it's just a little too much.
:bulletgreen: Another thing is the characters, they don't really fit in with the rest of the surroundings. It's hard to pinpoint what's wrong, it's just that the two look like they're from two completely different places. Maybe having softer edges or giving everything a common texture or just anything in common might help.
hope this helps c:

This is pretty good, and the texture of the ships and the background manage to say faithful to the trippy, yet hand-knit style of the game.

This is cool, and really captures the feel of the game. The only thing I would change is the intensity for the background color. It is so bright and hectic that it's hard for the eye to see anything else right away. All in all though, nice job!

I love digital collage, so your work is pretty fun for me to look at. As far as what was found vs what was made- I might try letting go a little more and incorporating even more found work. Definitely start collecting magazines/cool paper and scan it to use indefinitely. Its an important process to try with this kind of work. I'd look at other artists who do collage to get a feel for the breadth of material you can incorporate. [link] [link] [link]

Collage is all about shapes. But not just building shapes out of solid blocks- but multiple blocks. Use smaller pieces to put your work together- and from widely varying sources. Try vignetting the most important parts of your illustrations to cut down on the amount of rendering that collage requires. Your little people are the best part of this piece, but they're so small- it took me a while to notice them.

Finally, I loved that your panda piece included text, and the bear one had numbers. They're really inviting elements. I'd love to see that incorporated completely into your other work. Focus on composition, and challenge yourself to avoid horizontal horizon lines, or straight-on camera angles.

Try making some work for yourself, you've got a great process here.

How would a ship made of sponge stay afloat though?! The sponge would absorb the water.. and thus sink?!

It's great(:
I'm really NOT good with drawing ships, planes or whatever but this is pretty cute (:

the answer: very carefully. Or you could just get it so waterlogged that it's too heavy to float.

Excellent job on this.
