Episode 9 - We'll Always Be Together

South Amboy, New Jersey was just up ahead, and the state of New York not far beyond that. Bit by bit, the New Jersey Pine Barrens receded and the area they traveled through became more urban. They had found a handful of shadow creatures, but had managed to slip by undetected so far.

"Uh oh.." whispered Cassandra.

"Creepers?" whispered Lacrecia in reply.

"Yeah. Just had a flash of what's to come, and there's a huge gathering of them on the main road up ahead. There's nothing but water out to the east, and if we want to go around them it means doubling back and trying to head west."

"The opposite way than where we're trying to go.."

Lacrecia pondered for a moment before looking at Excalibur in her hands. Her crimson eyes steeled with determination as she got down onto her knees, Excalibur's point resting on the floor.

"What are you doing?!" Cassandra whisper-shouted.

"God..?" Lacrecia began in a quiet but clear voice. "I've never spoken to you before. But I've got one of yours here with me, and if you're there, I'm sure you don't want anything bad happening to her.." Cassandra stared on, her mouth hanging open. "I know my mom's probably the Antichrist, so you may have conflicted feelings about me.. but my dad is a good man. And he always believed in you too. So I'm here. Praying for the first time in my life. If we're really the only two girls left in the world, your prayer-phone must be pretty quiet right now.."

"Creesha.." Cassandra whispered, covering her mouth. Her eyes glistened with love and admiration. Lacrecia blew her a kiss and continued.

"I'm praying to you, to help us get through this and make the world right again. These people who've been tainted by the darkness didn't deserve this. They don't deserve what's about to happen. O Lord, please welcome them.."

"Wh-what..?" Cassandra asked in panic as Lacrecia got to her feet. "What do you mean, what's about to happen?"

"We're not going around, honey. We're going through."

"But there's too many!" she pleaded.

"Not with this" she said, holding up Excalibur. "Stay behind me, baby. I got this.."

A few minutes later and the horde was in sight. A gathering of at least five hundred shadows filled the main road. With nothing human left to pray on, they appeared to shuffle mindlessly, bumping in to one another. On finding the scent of the girls, a thousand black eyes turned in their direction. The noise rose into a deafening cacophony. Their flesh pulled back in a rictus grin, their yellow teeth catching the moon's light, they began to frenzy. Guttural muttering, and shrill hisses. They approached.

"Hey! Fuck-faces!" shouted Cassandra, finding her backbone. "My girlfriend wants a word with you!"

One shadow began to run. Then another. Then a dozen. In seconds, the baying herd was running in unison. Lacrecia held up her sword and kissed the flat of the blade before screaming into the night. She charged, and then time stopped. Cassandra would see only the aftermath.

For Lacrecia, she slowed time to the tiniest crawl and wade into the horde, swinging Excalibur left and right. It truly was a blade of legend. Each strike cut through not only her target, but rows of enemies behind and even collapsing buildings around them. She cleaved through without pause or mercy until the creatures were no more.

Time was unfrozen. Cassandra watched as one second the horde was there, and the next there was a huge explosion of dust, debris and body parts! She covered her ears as buildings on both sides crumbled to ruin all around for a mile. When the dust eventually settled, she saw Lacrecia. Standing triumphantly in the centre of the maelstrom, covered from head to toe in blood and dirt and sweat. Liath had been correct about the creatures. With them dead, the shadow was no more, and all was left were very human body parts.

"Oh my God.." whispered Cassandra to herself.

Always together or until they can fix the world (which I don't know why I have the feeling it would be involving time travel! ) :D

So badass!
Of course, slowing down time and having a super powerful sword- anything is possible!
Great piece and epic storytelling! Of course a gruesome sight probably, when these folks turn normal... but someone had to do it!
