Nate carefully entered the apartment he shared with his two adoptive fathers, trying to silently close the door behind him. Somewhat unsuccessfully.
"Nathaniel!" his father Keith shouted from the kitchen.
"Uhh.. yeah?" he responded anxiously.
"Did you just come from the apartment next door?" he accused.
"Yeah, umm.. Miss Lopes needed help putting up some shelves, so I volunteered."
"Well that explains the sound of hammering on the wall. But why the hell was she screaming 'Yes! Yes! Yes!' at the top of her lungs..?"
Nate entered the kitchen and was met by the judging stare of his father. "She liked what I was doing..?"
His other father, David, entered while adjusting his tie. "Liked is a bit of an understatement.."
"Doesn't your book say to 'Love they neighbour'?" Nate quipped.
Keith let out an exhasperated sigh and put his hand to his forehead. "Jesus didn't say anything about balling your neighbour, Nate."
"Well.. I did put them shelves up. So I think Jesus would be cool with it" Nate grinned.
David kissed Nate on the cheek before grabbing a piece of toast, pausing to kiss Keith on the head before heading for the door. "He did
say 'Love thy neighbour', Keith." he exited with a grin.
"Do I have to worry about you and our other neighbours, Nate?"
"No, Dad. I've already slept with Mr Taylor next door."
"Mr Taylor?!" he exclaimed in shock, "But the guy is my age!!"
Nate shrugged. "Old people can still be hot." he replied shamelessly.
"Take a shower! And get ready for work! NOW" Keith shouted.

Nate's routine was often the same. Before getting the subway to Manhattan, he stopped by a local deli and ordered an enormous sub with all the trimmings. Walking down the street with sub in his left hand, he stopped by a homeless man sat on the sidewalk. "Morning" he said. In the blink of an eye, an identical sub was also in his right hand, which he gave to the man. "Have a good day, bro" he said before continuing on his way to work, still armed with his original sub. Each homeless person he came across he would produce and gift them a new sub, asking for nothing in return.
Life for a surgical intern was much the same from day to day. The real variety came was the surgeries they were allocated to carry out. Nate was certainly skilled, but not exceptional. His after-care is where he excelled. Visiting a patient after a particularly lengthy tumour removal surgery, Nate stood beside the patient's bed to give them the news. "So the good news is the surgery went well. No complications, and the tumour was removed.." he said, his expression becoming more compassionate. "But we found the cancer had metastasised.. spreading to your lungs." He placed a hand on the patient's shoulder and the room seemed to shimmer with golden light for a moment, but gone so quickly it could be passed off as a trick of the sun. "But I want you to know we're very confident that after your next round of treatment, we'll see a big improvement.."
Shortly after the visit to his patient, Nate ran to the nearest restroom and violently threw up. "Uuugh.. I hate that part..." he muttered to himself before cleaning himself up.

Kate Five had been shot. The back of her head no longer existed. Centennia lay screaming a few feet away. Nate looked down at his green scrubs and found they were spattered with pinkish-purple gore from Kate's wound. With no time to think what a strange colour the viscera was, Nate sprung into action, checking for a pulse but found none.
"Uhh.. Miss Centennia." he shouted, "What do you know about her physiology? She's clearly not human!"
Centennia shook her head, "I don't know! We never found out! We have to do something!"
Nate turned his attention back to Kate's body, biting his bottom lip in concentration. Fuck fuck fuck,
he thought to himself. "Wait.. what's happening?" he said aloud as they watched Kate's body slowly collapse into an oily black puddle. "Huh.. well that's different..."
"We have to get her home!" Centennia demanded, dragging herself over to Kate's remains. "Do you have something to put her in?"
Nate's eyebrows rose high as he patted down his jacket, "I got pockets..?"
Centennia looked around in desperation and settled on her and Kate's scattered shopping bags. "Help me scoop her into this bag!"
"Should have expected this to turn into some X-Files shit.."
