Hi-Bit Samus Aran by Cyangmou Hi-Bit Samus Aran by Cyangmou
I saw Nintendo's Switch presentation and was super bummed that they still haven't announced a new Metroid game.

Practically I am waiting since 13 years for a new 2D installment and since Metroid Prime 3 which was released 10 years ago for another great 3D part (Prime 4, preferably developed by Retro Studios).

I am just not pleased how much care they gave to the franchise, so I made this, just to see how a new metroid 2D game could look like.

Restrictions:
This Animation is 1.5 times the size of Super Metroids Sprite, so at a height of ~70 pixels.
Which further means the sprite would be opptimized for a tilesize of 24x24 pixel.
The sprite a lso is done with a 32 color palette, so it'd be optimized for current handheld screensizes and smartphones, while maintaining the looks of classical 2D Metroids.

Have you played AM2R?
It was made by a super fan and C&D'd, but definitely on line in quality with Fusion and Zero Mission and provides 6-8 hours of gameplay for the first run, if you want to get all items.

well it's the internet, so yeah, still possible to get the game and it never will go away.
Most likely with the Mother 4 fangame the same will happen though.

That Fangame was super awesome, in places even more polished than Nintendo's 2D games.

3D or 2D doesn't matter a whole lot to me, I just want an exploration game again.
It's one of the few series where I like both gameplay formulas.
But Prime was just excellent in terms of art direction and world design.

I still want a strong pixelart aesthetic, because I think it's super important for a classic 2D Metroid.

Speaking of a new 2d metroid game that's exactly what I'm working on because Nintendo seems to of completely abandoned Metroid fans and has failed miserably to satisfy them. I hope this doesn't seem like self advertising but I think it's interesting how metroid fans are making their own content and hopefully we get a true metroid game someday. But I'm certainly not holding my breath and that's why I'm making my own game.

I also sincerely hope you try making your own metroid game since I'm sure if you did the pixel art you'd create something legendary.

I just think Metroid is a game which doesn't really work in line with Nintendos Agenda.
I also think nintendo doesn't want to produce more earnest games, because they don't sell as well in numbers as their "classical" games.

We get Federation FOrce, which is a lot more brighter, maybe better suited for kids.

Making metroid Style games and making a metroid game are 2 completely different things. Mostly because you got sucked in to it as a kid, and just have the positive memories.
Just the gameplay without the iconic characters or the established lore and world, just leaves the gameplay.
Nintendo always designed it's heroes according to their gameplay and Metroid even feels better in Gameplay than all post SotN Castlevania's, which is because of a ton of subtle design points.

Making your own Metroid games is a bad idea, because of the C&D's.

I agree that metroid doesn't really fit nintendo's cutesy agenda currently but then again, stuff like breath of the wild, although it's cartoon y, seems to have a more serious story compared to nintendo's recent entries in other franchises. Could this indicate nintendo slowly moving away from that stuff? Then again, with titles like 1 2 switch, maybe that's not the case sadly.

Oh god federation force. Just anyone bringing it up invokes painful memories of waiting for a new metroid game after other m (or after prime 3 if you have taste) and getting....sigh....federation force.

It's going to be a metroid styled game rather than simply a metroid fan game. But truth be told, I wanted to do a fan game but got scared at things like AM2R getting shut down. Hopefully just being like metroid in game play isn't enough to get a C&D but I could be wrong and the whole project could all be for nothing.

I just REALLY want a new, proper metroid and I'll even make a game as similar as I can get away with if I have to. I'd make an actual metroid fan game but again, AM2R, pokemon uranium, pokemon prism, etc...

Breath of the wild is fairytale style and doesn't come close to Majora's Mask for example.
1,2 Switch at least is innovative in it's own right and I think it's a super cool idea for a party game plus it doesn't collide with any franchise.

and the problem with AM2R was, that it is a high-fidelity remake of an already existing game, which cuts into nintendo's policy. They shut down games which possibly could hurt their sales.
And honestly: why would you buy or play Metroid II now if the free version is just bette rin every aspect you could think of? This could possibly hurt Nintendo on as monetary level as a company and also need to be seen from this perspective.

But the difference between a fangame and an official game is, that an official game always has all the marketing, financial support and credibility of the company and therefore can have a much shorter dev-cycle, much more popularity and overall credibility.

Majora's mask is my favorite zelda game of all time because of the deep themes it explores and I'd love for nintendo to make another one like that one.

I guess if it's not hurting other franchises it's harmless.

But potentially any fan game ever based of certain franchises could harm the original company's sales and I just don't think it's morally right to shut down projects like that just to save money and not lose a tiny bit of sales. Even if they did lose a lot from AM2R it's only because nintendo refuses to make the metroid game we want to play that actually contains, y'know, metroidvania elements that the series is supposed to be known for.

If AM2R DID hurt nintendo, it's only because they refuse to make the type of metroid game fans such as myself actually want. They may be legally right to take it down but they'll never be morally right for doing so. Such a disgrace to metroid's 30th anniversary. Nintendo could've hired the developers but instead they stomped them into the ground.

I'm going to continue making this game for as long as I possibly can and, if it does get taken down, I'll make it even more different from metroid so that it can survive (assuming this is indeed possible). In any case, I plan to save all my files and talk to a lawyer about all of this so I can be 100% safe.

Was also bummed at lack of Metroid for Switch... could have been the clincher alongside new Mario and Zelda. Excellent pixeling as always.

I really don't care much about Mario.
Zelda is mostly a bit "dumb" regarding to story and regarding to it's fantasy world.
I mean I loved Majora's Mask, but after overthinking it for longer than a decade why I am drawn to it, I guess this one is working for me because the story is not about destroying a primal evil, which is just there - instead MM is a game with pretty deep themes. It's also fairly dark, but has people in it which feel like actual people and problems which one could possibly refer to as "realistic" problems. It just stands out in temrs of overall world-design, but Breath of the Wild seems like another "fairytale" style game.
Metroid always was about you alone exploring a planet. The prime parts added a whole other level of detail and non-intrusive storytelling.

I am just sick that Nintendo pulls the plug for every game which goes a bit deeper. And they are just serving kids.

Oh, totally agree on the storytelling aspect versus the others. It really is a shame they have sidelined Metroid in comparison. How many marios, how many zeldas... then again quantity doesn't always make for quality.
