It was a normal day in the -King household. Tia’s sister was watching Netflix while snacking on her favorite ice cream, their brothers wrestling together on the floor, throwing light-hearted insults at each other. For Tia, it was a very important day: she was going to meet her new pets. No one knew yet, except maybe her sister.
“I’m going out, I’ll be back later!” She yelled out to her family, but only her sister acknowledged her presence by waving a distracted ‘goodbye’. She scurried out the front door, not wanting to be late to her appointment. Her head swiveled back to drink in the look of her pet’s new one last time—ivory walls, rose bushes and other assorted flower bushes surrounded the perimeter, large and clean windows, perfect for seeing out of. Five floors and twelve bedrooms, with as many bathrooms, a kitchen and so many nooks and crannies to explore, her Prehistoric pets would enjoy their mansion. Or she hoped so, anyway.
Skipping excitedly over to her beat-up truck that her family wished she’d swap for a mercedes or ferrari, and quickly got in. “I’m going to pick the best ones.” She told herself, grinning like a child on christmas. “With the biggest and most diverse personalities…” as if Prehistoric-Dinosaur like animals could have personality! She snarked at herself as she peeled out of their long driveway.
-------------
Staring up at the large, metal gates surrounding the large facility, Tia gaped. It was so big! Of course, that was probably required to keep them in, and people out. On one of the sides of the gate was a small speaker, so she could talk to be let in. Pressing the big red button, she swiftly and excitedly spoke into it. “Hello. It’s Tia King, I have an appointment to pick up some Archaeodons?”
She nearly jumped out of her skin as the large gates screeched open without anyone replying on the other end. Her fear was quickly taken back over by excitement again, and she ran in before the gates could shut on her.
Greeted by a kind caretaker, Tia was led towards a small enclosure, and from quite a few meters away she could see a bunch of furry bodies running around and making lots of noise.
“Are these the ones available for adoption?” she asked, wondering if she could lean down and touch them. They had such soft-looking fur!
“Yes they are, ma’am.” the employee said, nodding. “Usually we don’t let you pick but…” Tia was only have paying attention.
“Great! They’re all so cute. I want them all but… I don’t think that would be wise.” she shook her head sullenly, “but I’ll definitely get at least two. That way they won’t be lonely! And I can only get the boys, right? ‘Cause the females are too aggressive and big.”
“That’s exactly right. The GMD would have our heads if someone died after buying one.” Tia looked over the pups, spotting a snow-white one that stood out drastically from the rest of the pack.
“Woah. What about that one? The white one… Am I allowed to hang out with the Archaeodons I might choose for a bit before picking?” she asked, wondering if it were wise to go into an enclosure with a bunch of wild animals.
“You can choose one at a time. They can be a bit overwhelming at first. You said you wanted the whiteout one?” Whiteout? Okay, but I like ‘the white one’ better, she thought, nodding.
“Yes please.” she said, fully prepared to go through every single Archeadon cub in the entire enclosure, and there was a lot, to find the one she wanted.
--------------------------------------------
Hours later, with the Employee helping her frizzled and ready to collapse from carrying so many writhing furry bodies, Tia had picked out four extravagant creatures.
She’d been pleasantly surprised by how many differing personalities there were, once they were taken apart from the other cubs. The four she’d chosen ranged from calm and quiet, to loud and very playful.
“Thanks for your help, sir!” She said to the Employee, “How should I transport them home? I’ll pay for some cages to put in the back of my truck…”
And with that, the Employee was off on another mission-to get cages and other employees to help get the cubs into her truck so they could go home. Which sucked majorly because the crates were heavy.
“Do you have anything ready for them?” He gasped out, beginning to regret his decision on coming into work that day.
“Of course! I have harnesses and collars ready, and I snuck lots of raw meat into the freezer in my room from our hunting trip last week… and the only thing I have to worry about is my parents not finding out!” Tia clapped excitedly, resisting a squeal. She’d have to keep them away from her other pets, too, but he didn’t need to know that!
She had four squirrels, a hedgehog, two cats, four dogs (collectively, her entire family) a few skinks, a snake, a ferret, and now four Archaeodons! She wondered if the dogs and her pets would get along…
------------
“Boys! I need your help!” She burst into the living room, “I need to get a few new pets to my room before mom finds out-” she hadn’t even registered that her brothers, Tony and Lucas, were getting chewed out by their father. Probably for doing something stupid, like breaking the guard rails on the stairs. Again.
“Before mom finds out about what? What have you got now?” Her father looked at her, concern for his own well-being written all over his face. “Please don’t tell me you brought home another stray. We already have so many dogs…”
“Something better! Something so big it’ll actually take up a king sized bed when it’s older! Come see.” she skipped out of the front door again, and opened up the back door to her pick-up.
Lucas was the first to follow, always up for seeing what she brought home. She’d brought home bengal cats before, and when she brought home her snake, which was huge, Tony had nearly had a heart attack. “What are they?” He gasped, head tilting to the side slightly as he took in the four cages and what were in them.
“Archaeodons! They’re super big, but for now they’re small.” They’re really heavy so I need help getting them inside!”
“We can’t keep them!” Tony snapped, glaring at one that seemed to glare right back, with it’s orange eyes.
“Of course we can. And we will.” Tia’s dad sighed, “we don’t really have a choice, do we? She’s already gotten them… Just make sure they don’t break any of mom’s stuff. She’ll kill us all if she finds out they’ve broken her fine china.”
Tony scoffed. “They look dangerous.” Tia smiled at her dad, before promising she wouldn’t let them get into any trouble.
-----------
Reese sat on Tia’s bed, watching Tia struggle to get a pink harness onto the reddish one that Tony had a staring contest with earlier. “Try a different harness.” She suggested quietly, “Maybe the studded dark blue one. And put the pink harness on the white one.”
Tia sighed, “What are you, the Arch whisperer?” but she valued her sister’s imput and stopped trying to force the pink harness onto the writhing little body, who had angrily barked and yipped, trying to snap at her hands and the harness.
She leaned over into the box of harnesses and pulled out the dark blue one, which the cub had obviously found superior, because he only struggled a little bit. She ended up giving the white one a lavender harness with a collar to match, the black doe-eyed one an orange harness with white collar, and the blue-eyed orange and black one the pink harness and collar.
She was sweating and close to swearing at the end of it, but she’d done it, with a little bit of help from Reese, of course. “You’re a life-saver, Reese. I’m glad you’re around. I doubt the boys would have been as much help!” She joked, petting the doe-eyed one between it’s small ears.
“No problem, little sis! They look kind of badger-like, don’t they?” she hopped off the king-sized bed, sitting down on the floor beside her sister. The white one scrambled over to her, it’s stump of a tail wagging. She held out her arms to it, and it crawled into her, whining.
“They do, don’t they? And they need names. I’ve been calling this one Doe-eyes!” She laughed, “they’re more than just looks.”
“Hmm, I’ve always been pretty good with names. Want me to help you decide?” Reese smiled, happy to offer up her wonderful big-sister services once more.
“Yes please! I was thinking… Dakota for this cutie?” she stroked the doe-eyed Arch’s fluffy back, which Reese quickly agreed with.
“Maybe Tamarillo for this one? I’m not sure why but i think it sounds nice.” she rested her chin on the white one’s elongated head, to which it let out a bark.
“I think he agrees! Tamarillo it is then. That leaves two more names to find,” she looked at the reddish Arch and the Black and Orange Arch. They were both wrestling, snarling and snapping, at each-other. Playing if they played how dogs did. Tia hoped, anyway.
Reese broke in immediately. “Evander for the red one, and London for the black and orange one.”
“Oh I love them! Those are wonderful names for wonderful pets.” she grinned, hugging Dakota close, despite him being very heavy, even for a small cub.
“Be careful with them, though. Evander and London are going to be challenges, that’s for sure. We’ll have to train them up, and somehow keep mom from freaking out when she sees them.”
“Dinner’s ready, Tia!” their mother’s voice broke through the door. “I’m coming in. I haven’t seen you all--” she opened it without knocking, and let out a horrified gasp. “WHAT ARE THEY?!”
“ARCHAEODONS!” Reese yelled out. “This is Tamarillo, that’s Dakota, and those two are Evander and London!” she pointed to each one in turn, “We promise they won’t break anything!” but at that moment, Evander leaped away and sprinted out of the room from between their mother’s legs, nearly sending her falling, only for London to dodge through them too, affectively sending her down.
“Oh my gosh, sorry mom!” Tia scrambled clumsily to her feet, helping her up. Dakota began making huffing noises, upset that Tia had stopped petting him. “I’ll go get them before they find--” a loud howl came from the stairway, “--the dogs…”
She rushed from the room, watching in shock as Evander rolled over onto his back, whining and groveling at Brutus’s feet. Brutus was a big dog, a huge German Shepherd bred for being big. Brutus was Tony’s dog, which wasn’t surprising in the slightest. Both owner and dog had super big egos, and they seemed to match each-other perfectly.
Brutus snapped at Evander’s throat, and that was the end of their little dispute. Brutus was bigger by a long shot, and he was the big man of the house, not some silly cub. “Sorry, Brutus.” Tia said gently, “just let us get back to what we were doing, right?” she reached out to pet the big boy, only for him to snarl and snap at her hand. Squeaky out of fear, she grabbed both London and Evander and scurried back to her room.
“I hate that dog!” She squealed, “he’s scary.” Her mom rolled her eyes, leaning on the wall.
“Not as scary as… whatever these things are!” She pointed accusingly at Tamarillo, who whined and buried his large flat head into Reese’s shoulder.
“Aww, Mom, you said I could get whatever I wanted as long as it wasn’t something dangerous. These big boys aren’t dangerous. Only the females are! I’m not expecting to get a female… yet.” The brunette smirked to herself as she comfortingly patted Evander’s head.
“Right,” Mom eyed the four Archaeodons nervously, “as long as they don’t break anything.” She shook her head, before muttering something to herself and leaving the room. Brutus tried to snarl at her as she walked down the stairs but a smack was heard and a loud whining.
“Just like Tony.” Reese laughed, giving Tia a look. Tia laughed with her, grinning back at her big sister.
“Maybe Lucas will help us train them? Evander’s going to be an—“ Evander scurried out of her arms and back out of the room, intent on exploring. “Issue.” She winced as she heard a crash and loud screaming from her mother. “SORRY MOM!” Lucas yelped, “BUT IT WASN’T ME THIS TIME!”
Tia and Reese raced from the room, and down the stairs, their new badger-children following close behind, despite the stairs being rather steep. Lucas’ life depended on him not being caught, which you would think would be easy because they had a MANSION, but it wasn’t. “LUCAS ANDRIUS KING GET BACK HERE RIGHT THIS INSTANT,” their roaring mother was waving around a spatula angrily, following right at his heels. Evander was huffing and chittering, stump of a tail wagging as he watched.
A few feet away lay a knocked over sculpture, shattered into large and small chunks. “Evander, you bad boy!” Tia whispered, glaring at him. Evander huffed at her, as if saying, I didn’t get caught, mom! It doesn’t count!
Reese began to laugh again, before walking to the kitchen to get a broom so she could sweep up the sharp and small pieces. “Tia, watch them. Make sure they don’t get into anymore trouble.” But the second Reese left, the cubs were everywhere; too many places at once, not enough of her. Only Tamarillo stayed by her side, but he quickly left to go join Reese.
“Dakota! Come back here!” Tia yelped, “I’m not a disney princess I can’t just order you around at the snap of my fingers!” She lunged for him as he reared up on his hind paws, barely managing to keep him from slamming his paws on the window. London had leaped up onto one of the love seats, curling right up next to one of the cats, Sassy. Sassy was quite a character, but for some reason she didn’t seem to care what London did. Probably too lazy. Evander just sat back and watched all of it unfold, staring at Lucas as he was chased around for a crime he didn’t commit.
Tony was nearly bowled over by Brutus who was angrily barking and trying to make his voice heard, but the large dog stopped when he was told to heel. “These creatures are going to need a lot of training,” he spoke to Reese as she walked past, and Reese nodded.
“You’ll help, right, big brother?” Tia begged, “please? I don’t think I can do it on my own.” She looked close to tears as she struggled with Dakota, who was chirping and yipping, trying to join in on the fun.
Tony sighed, before telling Brutus to go upstairs. “Yes, I will. Don’t worry, T.” He took a deep breath, before taking Dakota from Tia. “We’ll take them outside first, and then train them. Grab the one off the loveseat Tia, please; Reese, get the other two.” He carried Dakota out, clawing and screaming, before letting him jump out of his arms.
Reese had Tamarillo following her anyway, but it was definitely a struggle getting Evander out of the house. Once all of the Arch’s had been rounded up, training was ready to begin.
“I’m going out, I’ll be back later!” She yelled out to her family, but only her sister acknowledged her presence by waving a distracted ‘goodbye’.
