we play chess at starbucks... by cweeks we play chess at starbucks... by cweeks
after stopping off the 101 -- i was friggin' tired -- for a doppio in the Valley on the way into Hollywood ... i noticed these two guys engaged in a one-sided game of chess.

finished my doppio.

and ... then ... approached them and asked if i may make a few photos.

why?

why didn't i just "shoot it spy-style" and leave?

dunno.

it's like a feeling.

sometimes i do.

the last time i was denied was in palm springs by a fat couple.

whatever.

perhaps they knew that i was perhaps making a parody photo.

dunno.

don't really care.

these guys said something in farsi and i heard the word leica.

they were very very cool.

didn't stick around to find out who won.

i was on a mission.

but ... i got a photo!

leica mp. nocti-lust ... 50/1.0. 1/30th at 1.4. ilford delta 400 (+1 at 800)

ILFORD IS FILM

I like how the body posture shows the position of the players on the board. You dont have to look at the board to see that white [gentleman on left] is in trouble.

I didnt a Thought not a comment... here it goes.

I like the picture alot. It reminds me of playing chess with my brother or how me and him will turn out when we are old. I am now encouraged to ask people for their picture when I like want to. I mean, i am not going to go shoot old men playing chess! hehehe, but dont know its something I didnt thought about before. Or was to afraid to do it.

i love playing chess. I do the same faces. I like that you asked them, for the picture. I have been wanting to take a lot of photos of people doing stuff sometimes too afraid of their overall reaction or they might just say no. So I just dont do it, but know I am encouraged to do it...!

wow...first time i view a photo on chess where the chess pieces have actually moved. usually its just the pose of two deeply thinking people staring at a chess board that no moves have been made...maybe they were telepathing each other on who shall start first...hmmm..

This is my favourite kind of photography =)
It's so much more intimate and personal than portraits where the only depth we get to see in the subject is in his or her's eyes and smile. This actually gives us some idea of their personality.
This photograph is especially moving. I love their expressions of concentration, and both men are fascinating physically.
Anyway, I'll stop rambling and get straight to the point: the picture is awesome. I wish you had centered it a little more on the table, but then again, the picture has more originality this way. It sort of leads us to believe that the man on the left will win :+fav:

I like this one a lot. I especially like the way the white chess pieces seem to be glowing like some weird angelic white army bent on defeating the black denizens of the deep... :P clearly it's a slow day at work and I am daydreaming about angelic and demonic chess pieces but still a really nice picture u have made.

Starbucks! I think that is the thing I miss most about the States, readily available warp-speed coffee on virtually every street corner. We have a place in Cape Town called Vida e Cafe here which makes good stuff but it means a special trip into the city cos they only have two branches. Weekend appointments with the place are a dead certainty however..

ciao

these guys said something in farsi and i heard the word leica.

After looking at a lot of your photos and reading some of your journal entries, I think the word "leica" and the idea of leicas have made their way into my subconscious: The other night I had a dream that was completely about buying a leica.

Not that I'd have enough money outside of dreamland. And not as though I'd be able to do one justice anyway.

But I still thought it was amusing.

I do like the looks of concentration on their faces. It's like... you can feel the thinking going on in their heads.
