Monocled Cobra by Culpeo-Fox Monocled Cobra by Culpeo-Fox
งูเห่าไทย.
Naja kaouthia.

The Monocled Cobra probably is the most common species of cobra in Thailand (this is shown by the sheer number of unlucky specimens who end up killed on the country roads alone, especially during the rainy season). There are countless stories that also support the apparent boldness of this cobra - never a snake that would shy away from human settlement, often finding its way into houses, kitchens and the like - which can be dangerous since the Monocled Cobra's venom is, in fact, more potent than that of the infamous King Cobra (even though the King delivers much larger doses).

Legend has it that its hood pattern, resembling a monocle (hence its common name), is the thumb print of the Buddha himself - to thank their kind when Mucalinda, the great Serpent King, would spread his hood over him while meditating, protecting him from the elements.

Dedicated to a hapless baby Monocled Cobra, who got stuck in our door a few days ago and couldn't get helped out alive. )':

Oh, these scales were actually quite okay, since i know it can be a lot worse. All the pythons and some sea snakes, for example - drawing all those scales are a pain in the ass.

Ya, I suppose just setting up the basic outline and just adding crosshatches would be pretty simple, heads abit different from the body.

Yes, this is one way how you could do it but i actually have a very different approach when it comes to drawing scales - i just draw them very intuitively, with no outlines whatsoever, adding them one by one - as i find this approach much more relaxing and meditative ( i would set up basic outlines, however, with some of the mentioned sea snakes, where you have scales that work and look very different from what you normally see on the average colubrid land snake)

I like how you included the shine on its tongue. =) Interesting how different snake species have all different colors of tongue, instead of just pink like most everything else.

Astounding details that give of a very stained glass feel. The background is beautify complex yet the cobra doesn't get lost in it at all. Lovely!! Black Rose

I love these snake drawings so much. Snakes are so wonderful! I wish more people would love them instead of fear them, they really are such beautiful and unique creatures.
